"(1) It is important that farm seeds be tested before they are sown. (2) Seed testing in its essential features giving practical results can be done more easily than is generally believed. (3)By means of seed test the actual value of seed in question as compared with seed of the best quality can be determined and damage to the crop or the land due to noxious weed seeds can be avoided. (4) Practical seed tests can be made with simple equipment by anyone interested in the purchase or use of seeds. (5) It is readily possible for the farmer to make practical tests of seeds, thereby safeguarding against partial or complete loss of crops. (6) Seed testing is admirably adapted for practical exercise work in elementary agriculture in rural schools (7) The essential preparation for making seed tests consists of providing the simple apparatus necessary and of becoming familiar with the general purposes and methods of testing and the features of importance peculiar to tests of particular kinds of seeds." -- p.47

Excerpt from Testing Farm Seeds in Home and School The popular agitation within recent years in the interest of better seed has brought about. A marked change in trade conditions, but much room for improvement still remains. Most States now have laws regulating the sale of agricultural seeds. The common feature in these laws requires agricultural seeds to be labeled to show the various elements of quality, such as purity, germination, chaff, and weed-seed content. The Federal Seed Act 3 sets up limits of quality that seed subject to the act must meet before it is permitted entry into the United States. This act also requires labeling and prohibits misrepresentation of seeds in interstate commerce. Although both Federal and State laws regulating the sale of agricultural seeds give valuable protection to the farmer it is also important that he be able to judge for himself the general quality of the seed offered him as well as that of seed produced for his own use on the farm. An essential reference for students, seed technologists, researchers, and seed industry personnel, this comprehensive guide outlines the most widely performed modern seed quality tests, explores the principles behind them, the history of seed testing, why seeds are tested and when, and sampling, sub-sampling, seed laboratory management, accreditation, and seed quality assurance programs. The authors describe statistical applications to seed testing and tolerances, and they provide a detailed morphological and structural description of seed formation and development. The book examines the testing of genetic traits and transgenic seeds, including DNA and protein genetic purity tests, and cultivar purity identification for conventional seeds. In addition to the most common seed purity and viability tests, tests for seed and seedling vigor, seed-borne diseases and seed moisture determination are also discussed.
