Excerpt from Common Trees of Ohio: A Handy Pocket Manual of the Common and Introduced Trees of Ohio There are many things so common in our daily lives that we accept them with little thought. So much a part of our existence they are that they become. Perhaps. Little known and often less appreciated. Trees run this risk. Shading us, protecting us. Purifying our water supply. Furnishing the homes that are built from them, providing the paper we use and serving us in thousands of ways. Trees deserve to be known and to be appreciated. Without them existence would be worth little. Our country is the greatest in the world. In wealth. In standards of living and in comforts it stands alone. Nature endowed it with boundless resources. We have taken this wealth and built a great nation. The trees in our forests have been our greatest resources: they have made possible what has been accomplished. Excerpt from Among Green Trees: A Guide to Pleasant and Profitable Acquaintance With Familiar Trees We now have a half-dozen recent popular books devoted to the trees Of the northeastern United States and Canada. These books are well written, well illustrated, and sold at a reasonable price. The aim of each is to describe all the trees, or approximately all, and to Show the general reader how he may learn to know them apart. All this is as it should be, and I doubt if any other country is so well provided. But the book that describes all the trees has this Obvious limitation: it can have little or no room left for other interesting and practical matter about trees. In Short, the identification book which deals only with the kinds and names of trees is necessarily one-sided, and there is a great need and a clear call today for an all-round tree book. Moreover, all the trees are too many for most readers. The greater the number to consider, the harder it is to distinguish and to remember them. Few of us care to know about all the oaks; it is the ten or a dozen common oaks that we want to know - to recognize wherever we see them growing. This book aims in Part IV to describe the common and important trees that grow in the states north of Virginia and Arkansas, and east of the Rocky Mountains. Among the native species are included many forms introduced from other countries, and commonly planted in the United States. About 125 different kinds of trees are described. The limits set to the identification part of this book give room for the consideration of much besides that is of interest and importance to any one who loves trees and longs for a closer and more intelligent acquaintance with them. In Part II the author has nothing new nor startling to reveal on the subject of the life that a tree lives from day to day. The facts stated are set down in books already. But these books are written for the special, not for the general reader. They are learned books, which abound in technical terms. They satisfy the scientific mind which has this particular botanical bent. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Studies of Trees IN presenting this volume, the author is aware that there are several excellent books, dealing with one phase or another of tree life, already before the public. It is believed, how ever, that there is still need for an all-round book, adapted to the beginner, which gives in a brief and not too technical way the most important facts concerning the identification, structure and uses of our more common trees, and Which considers their habits, enemies and care both when grow ing alone and when growing in groups or forests. In the chapters on the identification of trees, the aim has been to bring before the student only such characters and facts as shall help him to distinguish the tree readily during all seasons of the year. Special stress is laid in each case on the most striking peculiarities. Possible confusion with other trees of similar appearance is prevented as far as possible through comparisons with trees of like form or habit. Only such information is given concerning the structure and requirements of trees as will enable the reader better to understand the subsequent chapters. In the second half of the book, practical application is made of the student's general knowledge thu's acquired, and he is acquainted with the fundamental principles of planting, care, forestry, wood identification and nature study. The author recognizes the vastness of the field he is attempting to cover and the impossibility of even touching.
