This report presents the results of an analysis of the response that deflections and backcalculated asphalt moduli have to the pavement temperature. The study used deflection and temperature data from 40 sites monitored in the Seasonal Monitoring Program of the Long Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) program. The report presents improved methods of estimating the temperature within an asphalt pavement based on the measurement procedures used for the LTPP program. The data necessary to estimate the temperature within the asphalt included the surface temperature, time of day, depth below the surface, and the average air temperature from the previous day.

Roads and Airports Pavement Surface Characteristics contains the papers presented at the 9th International Symposium on Pavement Surface Characteristics (SURF 2022, Milan, Italy, 12-14 September 2022). The symposium was jointly organized by the Italian company that manages Italy’s National Roads (ANAS –Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane Group), the World Road Association (PIARC) and Politecnico di Milano. The contributions aim to improve the quality of pavement surface characteristics while accomplishing efficiency, safety, sustainability, and addressing new generation mobility needs. The book covers topics from emerging research to engineering practice, and is divided in the following sections: Advanced and performing construction methods and equipment Next generation mobility Data monitoring and performance assessment Surface features and performances| Maintenance and preservation treatments Pavement management Economic and political strategies Safety and risk issues Minimizing road impacts Sustainability and performances issues about materials and design Pavements surfaces and urban heat islands Weather conditions impact Airport pavements Roads and Airports Pavement Surface Characteristics is of interest to academics, engineers and professionals in the fields of pavement engineering, transport infrastructure, and related disciplines.

Established as part of the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) and now managed by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the Long Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) program faces a significant challenge. Over the past decade, the LTPP program has developed a solid knowledge base for understanding how pavements perform. Its challenge throughout its second decade is to build on this foundation--to further the understanding of why pavements perform as they do. To address this challenge, FHWA has initiated several efforts that require the support and active participation of the States and Provinces. The intent of this document is to describe the challenge the LTPP program faces and explain the efforts underway to address this challenge. This document is presented in the following sections: Introduction; The Challenge; Addressing the Challenge; Critical Issues; and Future Opportunities.

Advances in Materials and Pavement Performance Prediction contains the papers presented at the International Conference on Advances in Materials and Pavement Performance Prediction (AM3P, Doha, Qatar, 16- 18 April 2018). There has been an increasing emphasis internationally in the design and construction of sustainable pavement systems. Advances in Materials and Pavement Prediction reflects this development highlighting various approaches to predict pavement performance. The contributions discuss links and interactions between material characterization methods, empirical predictions, mechanistic modeling, and statistically-sound calibration and validation methods. There is also emphasis on comparisons between modeling results and observed performance. The topics of the book include (but are not limited to): • Experimental laboratory material characterization • Field measurements and in situ material characterization • Constitutive modeling and simulation • Innovative pavement materials and interface systems • Non-destructive measurement techniques • Surface characterization, tire-surface interaction, pavement noise • Pavement rehabilitation • Case studies Advances in Materials and Pavement Performance Prediction will be of interest to academics and engineers involved in pavement engineering.
