Leviathans at the Gold Mine is an ethnographic account of the relationship between the Ipili, an indigenous group in Papua New Guinea, and the large international gold mine operating on their land. It was not until 1939 that Australian territorial patrols reached the Ipili. By 1990, the third largest gold mine on the planet was operating in their valley. Alex Golub examines how "the mine" and "the Ipili" were brought into being in relation to one another, and how certain individuals were authorized to speak for the mine and others to speak for the Ipili. Considering the relative success of the Ipili in their negotiations with a multinational corporation, Golub argues that a unique conjuncture of personal relationships and political circumstances created a propitious moment during which the dynamic and fluid nature of Ipili culture could be used to full advantage. As that moment faded away, social problems in the valley increased. The Ipili now struggle with the extreme social dislocation brought about by the massive influx of migrants and money into their valley.

Berwick Coates found it something of a shock when he worked out that he had taught over 40,000 lessons. However, with a record like that, it seemed not unreasonable to suppose that he might have a thing or two to say. Among others is the great truth that the classroom is not a democracy, a salon, a debating chamber, or a symposium; it is an arena, which is pervaded by a semi-permanent state of friendly undeclared war. Victory does not go to either side; you win some and you lose some. Survival depends on proper knowledge, awareness, flexibility, resilience, a willingness to learn, thinking on the feet, a sense of humour, and low cunning.

"You will be the gift to the community" was all the author could hear ringing in her ear as she pursued a successful teaching career in the Philippines and the USA for 33 years. Those words were from her dad who had chosen her teaching profession. Ms. Lawson had tried to persevere and take care of the very demanding task of teaching here and abroad, garnering accolades for her dedication to her profession and teaching expertise! She could have sought a more lucrative career, but her passion to give her children a very good start in their life through their love of education and learning was all she cared for. In her own words: "I would attribute my success to hard work and being very passionate about helping children grow in their learning, and hoping to provide them with a bright future!" Her joyful and successful experiences she had with the children encouraged her to write all the rich ideas, knowledge, great pedagogical methods, and activities accumulated through her teaching years as her legacy to those who found the love of teaching like herself, especially to the new teachers and those coming from abroad to pursue their teaching here. Her advice to them: "Listen to your children. Pay attention to them. They will teach you to be the best teacher you could ever be!" Though now enjoying her peaceful retirement, Ms. Lawson has not diminished her commitment to the education and learning of the children, for she has penned another children's book, "Reading Made Easy" to help children learn to read. She has learned that "once you are a teacher, you are a teacher forever!" This is a very solid teaching book the author has written that professionals will rely on. Her foreign perspective on teaching is just as valuable and insightful as her experience in the states. Her recounts of all her teaching experiences are very profound and inspiring! It is something that will always stay with readers after they finish the book.
