This paper summarizes the background, methodology and findings of initial efforts to improve our approach to training and assessing high-performance skills. High performance skills are those that require accurate and precise perceptual - motor coordination to achieve desired levels of expertise. We review and integrate key areas of knowledge related to skill acquisition and expertise, address strategies for teaching and assessing complex skills, and examine the use of technologies that enable precise recording of trainee performance. Instructional strategies are discussed to accelerate complex skill development, based upon learning principles and enhanced performance feedback. Developments in simulation training technologies, with performance monitoring capabilities, provide a means for studying and improving high performance skills. The US Army's Engagement Skills Trainer (EST) was designed to teach basic and advanced marksmanship skills, and can be used to monitor performance progress from novice to expert. In this paper, the EST was used as a test bed to explore possible training enhancements and performance assessment metrics for military rifle marksmanship training. Our study of marksmanship skill benefited from the emergence of precise instrumentation for digital recording of trainee performance. We used motion capture technology to define and to measure proper rifle shooting postural profiles associated with different levels of marksmanship expertise. Motion capture allowed us to model various levels of expertise, ranging from novice to expert, as a means to define skill differences. While results reported here are promising, further research and development in motion capture is needed in order to realize the full potential for the practical application of shooting profiles in the determination of skill levels and analysis of learner deficiencies during simulation training.

"This research compared the relative impact of two approaches for training Basic Rifle Marksmanship (BRM). One hundred and eighty four One-Station Unit Training (OSUT) infantry trainees (i.e., the experimental group) trained under a U.S. Army Reserve (USAR)-developed, device-based (i.e., the Beamhit Laser Marksmanship Training System LMTS) approach, and 202 infantry trainees (i.e., the control group) trained under the standard U.S. Army Infantry School BRM program of instruction. Results revealed that the experimental group outperformed the control group on shot grouping, weapon zeroing, and known-distance firing. No between-group differences were found, however, for record fire qualification scores or for performance during pop-up target engagement practice periods leading up to qualification. The implications of these findings for initial marksmanship training are discussed along with plans for follow-up USAR-sponsored research to assess (a) the impact of LMTS-based training on sustainment performance, and (b) the feasibility of using LMTS-based performance to predict live-fire qualification scores."--Stinet.

The UCLA National Center for Research on Evaluation, Standards, and Student Testing (CRESST) conducted research on assessment models and tools designed to support Naval distance learning (DL), with application to USMC marksmanship training. CRESST examined the role of cognitive and non-cognitive variables in the prediction of rifle marksmanship performance in a series of studies. The evidence suggests a knowledge component to shooting performance, and differences in knowledge of rifle marksmanship between participants' pre-classroom training and post-classroom training, between more experienced participants and less experienced participants, between high performers and low performers, and between higher aptitude and lower aptitude participants. Knowledge measures can predict record-fire scores moderately in less experienced samples, and when combined with other variables within the stages-of-skill-processing framework, can predict record-fire scores as well as scores from a rifle simulator.

Training systems for teaching marksmanship skills have existed since the invention of bows and arrows. Ammunition, rifles and instructors are expensive, weather conditions are not always suitable, and handling loaded firearms is a dangerous activity. Instructors and training systems developers have always sought to create better ways of conducting the training. Built upon the availability of low-cost personal computer technology, computer-based simulators for marksmanship training came into widespread use in the early 1990s. Such simulators have been adopted by almost every defense organization and law enforcement agency around the world and now simulators for training marksmanship skills is a multi-billion dollar industry, with more than $10 billion being invested in such infrastructure in the US alone, and possibly double or triple that in the rest of the world. With improvements and lowering of costs in sensor and computer technologies, growth is expected in marksmanship simulation technology for individuals and sporting organisations. Since the mid-1990s, the Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) in Australia, along with similar organisations in Canada, the USA and the UK, have conducted research in the field of evaluating marksmanship simulators. The purpose of this book is to capture and condense the knowledge that researchers have acquired about marksmanship simulation over the last two decades into a single volume to provide a valuable resource for practitioners, manufacturers and organisations that use marksmanship simulators. Although the book focuses on simulation for training of marksmanship skills, it also demonstrates how the lessons learned in marksmanship simulators can be extended to other types of tasks that require the training of fine psychomotor skills, including tasks such as welding, key-hole surgery, gunnery, and vehicle operations.

"This research provided an initial assessment of the impact on performance outcomes of providing additional time for Basic Rifle marksmanship (BRM) training in Basic Combat Training (BCT) and of integrating Asymmetric Warfare Group (AWG) and Combat Application Training Course (CAT-C) training techniques within two BCT Companies. The report provides a snapshot of how Soldiers retained marksmanship skills in association with the integration of AWG training techniques in BRM and the addition of one week to the BCT schedule. Results indicated that the new training techniques and additional training time did not significantly impact performance outcomes or BRM skill retention when compared to BRM performance of Soldiers trained using legacy techniques and less training time during BCT. Although sample and methodological considerations limit the generalizability of this research, it provides some essential insights into the initial integration of CAT-C/AWG training strategies and techniques within BCT at Fort Jackson."--DTIC.
