A SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM THE GOVERNOR Tampa richly deserves its reputation as a dynamic leader of the Sun Belt, a city whose self-confidence is apparent in the spirit of its and their enthusiastic building for the future. But Tampa, as we native Floridians know, boasts a history as impressive as its future. Long before Americans savored a hand-rolled cigar, or marveled at the international airport, Tampa had established its reputation as a frontier post, a cattle center and a gateway to the Gulf. Names like De Soto, McKay, Lesley, Gutierrez, Plant, Ybor, Spicola, Knight, Lykes and Ferguson-these names have enriched Tampa. Tampa has, in turn, added luster to the Sun- shine State. The authors, Gary Mormino and Tony Pizzo, have captured Tampa’s special sheen with words and pictures that will make its fame and beauty even more broadly recognized than they are to- day. Their work is a worthy contribution to the American Portrait Series and does credit not only to their subject, but to their talent. It would make a great addition to your home, school or as a Christmas present that should get much use. BOB GRAHAM Governor of Florida It would make a great addition to your home, school or as a Christmas present that should get much use. Excerpt From: Gary R. Mormino and Anthony P. The tale begins over three-hundred years ago, when the Fair People—the goblins, fairies, dragons, and other fabled and fantastic creatures of a dozen lands—fled the Old World for the New, seeking haven from the ways of Man. With them came their precious jewels: diamonds, rubies, emeralds, pearls... But then the Fair People vanished, taking with them their twelve fabulous treasures. And they remained hidden until now... Across North America, these twelve treasures, over ten-thousand dollars in precious jewels, are buried. The key to finding each can be found within the twelve full color paintings and verses of The Secret. Yet The Secret is much more than that. At long last, you can learn not only the whereabouts of the Fair People's treasure, but also the modern forms and hiding places of their descendants: the Toll Trolls, Maitre D'eamons, Elf Alphas, Tupperwerewolves, Freudian Sylphs, Culture Vultures, West Ghosts and other delightful creatures in the world around us. The Secret is a field guide to them all. Many "armchair treasure hunt" books have been published over the years, most notably Masquerade (1979) by British artist Kit Williams. Masquerade promised a jewel-encrusted golden hare to the first person to unravel the riddle that Williams cleverly hid in his art. In 1982, while everyone in Britain was still madly digging up hedgerows and pastures in search of the golden hare, The Secret: A Treasure Hunt was published in America. The previous year, author and publisher Byron Preiss had traveled to 12 locations in the continental U.S. (and possibly Canada) to secretly bury a dozen ceramic casques. Each casque contained a small key that could be redeemed for one of 12 jewels Preiss kept in a safe deposit box in New York. The key to finding the casques was to match one of 12 paintings to one of 12 poetic verses, solve the resulting riddle, and start digging. Since 1982, only two of the 12 casques have been recovered. The first was located in Grant Park, Chicago, in 1984 by a group of students. The second was unearthed in 2004 in Cleveland by two members of the Quest4Treasure forum. Preiss was killed in an auto accident in the summer of 2005, but the hunt for his casques continues.

Florida has the longest recorded history of any state, dating back to the journeys of Spanish conquistadores in the early sixteenth century. From the voyages of Ponce de León to the dawn of the Space Age, Florida has played an important role in the history of the United States. This concise history shows Florida's evolution from European colony to American state and jewel of the Sunbelt. It chronicles the struggles between the United States and Spain, the trauma of the Civil War, and the great booms of development in the twentieth century, as well as how Floridians have grappled with the problems of over development in the 'Sunshine State'. Over 50 illustrations, photographs, and maps enrich this text, which is perfect for the vacationer, the student, and all curious readers.

Westshore is a community on the western fringes of Tampa that has served as a hub of commerce and entertainment for many decades. Growing from agricultural lands near the northeastern shores of Old Tampa Bay in the late 19th century, Westshore has seen a multitude of transformations over the past century that helped put the Tampa Bay area on the map, including the development of a small airstrip that later became Tampa International Airport and the construction of a football stadium that lured the National Football League to award Tampa its own franchise--the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Since the 1960s, the community has also seen an outstanding concentration of commercial space that collectively earned Westshore bragging rights as the largest office market in Florida. Yet Westshore is more than a nine-to-five nerve center of commerce. With two regional malls, hundreds of shops and restaurants, and more than 15,000 residents, Westshore has grown into one of the most vivacious regions of Tampa.

Florida Historical Society Harry T. and Harriette V. Moore Award From the founding of Ybor City in 1886 to the dispersal of Tampa's Latin population in the years following World War II, Tampa's Cigar Workers documents the history of the Cuban, Spanish, and Italian immigrants who created the cigar industry in Tampa and the extraordinary multi-ethnic community that flourished around it. More than 200 photos capture this community's personalities and way of life while commentary drawn from newspaper accounts, oral histories, and archival documents identifies and explains each photograph's historical place and significance. In linking the photographs with historical text, the authors allow the cigar workers to tell their own story, in the language of their day. The rich photographic record around which the book is organized communicates the lives of these workers not only in the workplace but also in their vibrant Ybor City and West Tampa neighborhoods. The book depicts the making of cigars, the work culture, local support for the Cuban War of Independence (1895-1898), unions and strikes, community institutions such as mutual aid clubs, leisure activities, and social practices surrounding courtship, marriage, and death. Highlighting the diversity of the cigar workers' community, the authors present an inspiring and deeply moving story of how these immigrants carved out their space in Tampa while struggling to survive economically and defending their ideals and way of life.

African Americans have risen from the slave plantations of nineteenth-century Florida to become the heads of corporations and members of Congress in the twenty-first century. They have played an important role in making Florida the successful state it is today. This book takes you on a tour, through the 67 counties, of the sites that commemorate the role of African Americans in Florida's history. If we can learn more about our past, both the good and the not-so-good, we can make better decisions in the future. Behind the hundreds of sites in this book are the courageous African Americans like Brevard County's Malissa Moore, who hosted many Saturday night dinners to raise money to build a church, and Miami-Dade's Gedar Walker, who built the first-rate Lyric Theater for black performers. And of course also featured are the more famous black Floridians like Zora Neale Hurston, Jackie Robinson, Mary McCleod Bethune, and Ray Charles.

Its abundant history is uniquely told with a leisurely stroll through the city's historic cemeteries. Oaklawn Cemetery, Tampa's first public burial ground, was created in 1850 when Tampa had only 500 residents. By the late 1800s, some of Tampa's most prominent citizens were buried in newly formed cultural and social club burial grounds.
