"The workplace is stressful these days. Sync or Swim is a refreshing story of a sheepdog and a puffin that helps us to solve a frustrating mystery: Why do morale-building programs often hurt morale . . . and why does communicating appreciation too often result in cynical reactions? In Sync or Swim, you'll follow an organizational manager and the challenges he has to overcome: - A threating storm rapidly approaching the island - The expectation to do more with less - Complaining, negative team members - Morale of loyal employees who feel undervalued - Long history of mismanagement It's a small tale with great wisdom, a classic insight into the ways expressing authentic appreciation can change everything-and help us survive the storms that threaten us in work and life"--

As a parent new to synchronized swimming, I wanted to support my daughter in her new adventure of learning the sport. But I didn’t know where to turn. A Google search and an Amazon search only disclosed so much. That’s why I decided to put this guidebook together – to help other parents. As a non-swimming family, until now, I searched for resources and found very little. I was starting at ground zero, so I hunted for information from speed swimming and other synchronized swimming families and coaches. I’ve compiled the information in a format for first time parents (based on what I have learned through my daughter’s club). When I refer to first time parents in this guidebook, it is those family members or legal guardians who are supporting a child new to this sport. Should your daughter try? My answer is “of course!” Especially, if your daughter danced, swam or participated in gymnastics or cheerleading, she will understand and enjoy this sport.

From novelty tricks in swim classes, through the Aquacades and movies, to the highly complex Olympic competitions--this history of synchronized swimming tells how the sport grew, examines the role the United States has played in its worldwide development, and describes the status of synchronized swimming in world sporting events today. Among the topics covered are competition development, development around the United States, rules and technical changes, and leadership (from volunteers to a National Office). Four appendices list major award winners, U.S. National Champions, the results of major international competitions, and U.S. participation in international events. The work boasts photographs from the first trial national competition in 1942 to the World Championships of 2003, as well as a full bibliography.

The revised edition of Sync or Swarm promotes an ecological view of musicking, moving us from a subject-centered to a system-centered view of improvisation. It explores cycles of organismic self-regulation, cycles of sensorimotor coupling between organism and environment, and cycles of intersubjective interaction mediated via socio-technological networks. Chapters funnel outward, from the solo improviser (Evan Parker), to nonlinear group dynamics (Sam Rivers trio), to networks that comprise improvisational communities, to pedagogical dynamics that affect how individuals learn, completing the hermeneutic circle. Winner of the Society for Ethnomusicology's Alan Merriam prize in its first edition, the revised edition features new sections that highlight electro-acoustic and transcultural improvisation, and concomitant issues of human-machine interaction and postcolonial studies.
