Norman Keifetz, who has published three novels, had plays performed, entertained readers with many short stories, is a surprising writer. A treat for readers who know his work and for those who come upon his writing for the first time. He's not a household name and it is puzzling why he doesn't have that kind of celebrity. If a good book is a cure for insomnia, he will keep you awake and thinking and wanting more. Mr. Keifetz has lectured on writing and the creative spirit over the years at book festivals and seminars around the country -- in little cities and big -- Glens Falls, NY, Las Cruces, NM, Cincinnati, OH, Chicago, IL --to name a few. He's published literary criticism, poetry, and has had plays produced. Sweet, Sour, and Sad is his first collection of unpublished works. His new bi-lingual novella, The Smoking Contest (in English and French), is on press. Mr. Keifetz was married to the late Joyce Engelson, a legendary editor in book publishing. And their daughter, Mandy Keifetz, was the fiction winner of the 2010 AWP Award Series with her novel, Flea Circus.

A major addition to the literature of poetry, Edward Hirsch’s sparkling new work is a compilation of forms, devices, groups, movements, isms, aesthetics, rhetorical terms, and folklore—a book that all readers, writers, teachers, and students of poetry will return to over and over. Hirsch has delved deeply into the poetic traditions of the world, returning with an inclusive, international compendium. Moving gracefully from the bards of ancient Greece to the revolutionaries of Latin America, from small formal elements to large mysteries, he provides thoughtful definitions for the most important poetic vocabulary, imbuing his work with a lifetime of scholarship and the warmth of a man devoted to his art. Knowing how a poem works is essential to unlocking its meaning. Hirsch’s entries will deepen readers’ relationships with their favorite poems and open greater levels of understanding in each new poem they encounter. Shot through with the enthusiasm, authority, and sheer delight that made How to Read a Poem so beloved, A Poet’s Glossary is a new classic.

I wrote Sweet and Soureither because there was too much inside of me and I had to scream it out or because there was nothing inside of me and I had to fill it out. I was struggling between two different worlds, and Sweet and Sour was what came out of it. You will read about the beauty in a cup of tea as well as the beast-natured humans who stoned a girl. This book is mostly written by my fourteen-year-old self who was trying to build herself from ashes to be the one who will remember the screams of the girls and women in Afghanistan and to fit in into a new environment where there are really few people like her.

Mark Oakley reveals George Herbert as a fine companion with whom to examine the journey of the soul. His poems are 'heart-work and heaven-work', embracing love and closeness, anger and despair, reconciliation and hope. There is too an appealing and audacious playfulness about Herbert: he seems to take God on, knowing God will win, confident God will not abandon him. This sense of relationship with God as primarily friendship is one of many intriguing and healing aspects we are invited to consider. George Herbert is one of the great 17th century poet-priests. His poems embrace every shade of the spiritual life, from love and closeness, to anger and despair, to reconciliation and hope. And his work is always rich with audacious playfulness: he seems to take God on, knowing God will win, as if he's having an argument with a faithful friend he knows is not going to leave. In much of theology and spirituality, God is a critical spectator to human lives, but for Herbert, his sense of relationship with God is primarily of a friendship that can never be broken. These are some of the themes Mark Oakley explores in this outstanding book 'My Sour-Sweet Days contains forty well-chosen poems by George Herbert (widely considered the greatest devotional poet in the English language), each of which is followed by a short but profound reflection by Mark Oakley. The combination is excellent: richly expressive poems and accessible personal meditations. This book powerfully demonstrates how poetry can bring comfort, refreshment and renewed energy to our spiritual lives.' Professor Helen Wilcox, editor of the critically acclaimed edition of The English Poems of George Herbert (Cambridge University Press, 2007) 'It's extremely unusual to meet anyone who isn't a specialist who has such a subtle feeling for language as Mark Oakley does.' Sir Andrew Motion, former Poet Laureate

I have penned down some insights which I felt when experiencing different emotions and feelings. I am pretty sure that my readers can relate to many of the poems as we all share the same mysterious life. In some pages you will find hope and in some despair. But in the end, I have mostly thought of experiencing both to lead a meaningful life. I sincerely hope you can rise above your sufferings and enjoy the mysteries of life.

Semantic Relations and the Lexicon explores the many paradigmatic semantic relations between words, such as synonymy, antonymy and hyponymy, and their relevance to the mental organization of our vocabularies. Drawing on a century's research in linguistics, psychology, philosophy, anthropology and computer science, M. Lynne Murphy proposes a pragmatic approach to these relations. Whereas traditional approaches have claimed that paradigmatic relations are part of our lexical knowledge, Dr Murphy argues that they constitute metalinguistic knowledge, which can be derived through a single relational principle, and may also be stored as part of our extra-lexical, conceptual representations of a word. Part I shows how this approach can account for the properties of lexical relations in ways that traditional approaches cannot, and Part II examines particular relations in detail. This book will serve as an informative handbook for all linguists and cognitive scientists interested in the mental representation of vocabulary.
