In recent years, with the rapid growth of the Internet, the bandwidth demand for data traffic is exploding. Optical networks based on wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) technology offer the promise to satisfy the bandwidth requirements of the Internet infrastructure. With WDM technology, signals are carried simultaneously on mUltiple wavelengths on a single fiber. WDM provides a practical approach of resolving the mismatch between the fiber ca pacity and the peak electronic processing speed. Mesh-based WDM networks have recently attracted much research and development interest since the In ternet topology is meshed in nature, and more importantly, mesh-based WDM networks are flexible with respect to routing and survivability. This book exam ines the management and survivability issues of mesh-based WDM networks and proposes new WDM network protocols and algorithms that could make telecommunication networks more efficient. Wavelength-routing has been one of the most important technologies to em ploy WDM in backbone networks. In wavelength-routed WDM networks, optical channels, which are referred to as lightpaths, are set up between WDM terminals. Most chapters of this bock are focused on various issues related to wavelength-routed networks, namely, routing and wavelength-assignment, con trol and management, fault management, and wavelength-converter placement. This book also presents an all-optical packet-switched network architecture based on the concept of photonic slot routing. The audience for this book are network designers and planners, research and development engineers active in the field of telecommunications, and students of optical networking at the graduate or senior undergraduate levels.

The recent trend towards the interoperability of traditionally separate networks, such as terrestrial, wireless/cellular, and satellite, for the support of multimedia applications poses new and significantly challenging problems to network design. This book reports on the state-of-the-art work developed during the four years of operation of the COST 279 Action, Analysis and Design of Advanced Multiservice Networks supporting Mobility, Multimedia, and Internetworking, by its participating researchers, originating from over 40 research institutions from the academic, industrial, and telecom operator worlds. The work includes both fundamental, methodological, and applied aspects of network performance evaluation and design. Analysis and Design of Advanced Multiservice Networks Supporting Mobility, Multimedia, and Internetworking contains a detailed account of the work developed, supported on an extensive bibliography of material published in the peer-reviewed literature. It contains the following six chapters: IP-Based NetworksQueueing Models Traffic Measurement, Characterization, and ModelingWireless NetworksOptical NetworksPeer-to-Peer Services Analysis and Design of Advanced Multiservice Networks Supporting Mobility, Multimedia, and Internetworking will appeal to both practitioners of network design, and to researchers aiming to map future directions in networking research.

Competition within the telecommunications companies is growing fiercer by the day. Therefore, it is vital to ensure a high level of quality and reliability within all telecommunications systems in order to guard against faults and the failure of components and network services. Within large scale systems such quality and reliability problems are ever higher. The metrics of Quality and Reliability have to date only been available in journals and technical reports of companies which have designed or produced major parts of systems used in large applications. This book provides a self-contained treatment enabling the reader to be able to produce, define and utilise the metrics of Quality and Reliability required for the design and implementation of a large application such as a world class event as the Olympic Games. An additional outcome is that this book can be used as a guide for producing an ISO standard for large scale Systems such as the Olympic Games. * Provides presentations of techniques used for solving quality and reliability problems in telecommunications networks replete with illustrations of their applications to real-world services and world class events * Individual chapters written by respective international experts within their fields This will prove highly informative for Practising engineers, researchers and telecommunications professionals, academics and graduate students in telecommunications, standards bodies and organisations such as ISO.
