"The first recorded marriages in the Carolina area came in 1741 with the passage of a[n] act similar to that of Virginia requiring a bond to ensure the validity of the proposed marriage. The act remained in its basic unchanged form until it was modified in 1868 with the current state license process. These bonds form the core of the records abstracted here. The materials were first copied by youths during the depression under the National Youth Administration Project, a make-work assistance program created in the depths of the Great Depression... Later during the 30s the Historical Records Project, a creation of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) , organized the youth's transcriptions and the final copies were made under the supervision of the Genealogical Society of Utah. The original surviving marriage bonds are housed in the archives of the North Carolina Historical Commission in Raleigh, NC... The current work has been abstracted directly from these WPA 'originals'. In all, 5,516 marriages are included in the present work"--page iii.

Based on recorded wills and original wills at the North Carolina State Archives as well as "Loose Estate Papers" of intestates, these abstracts cover not only wills but powers of attorney, bonds, inventories, bills of sale, etc. Significantly, Surry County lay within the Granville Proprietary at its formation, and after Lord Granville's death in 1763 until 1778, the Proprietary land office did not reopen, making it very difficult--but for these will abstracts--for the present-day researcher to establish the residence of many individuals during that time period. What is more, as there are no extant marriage bonds for Surry County for the period 1771 to 1780, these will abstracts assume an importance out of all proportion to their customary value.
