Excerpt from A Saunter Through Surrey I want a. Preface - an uncommon want, my publisher insists on one, and the printer 's walting. A preface, I believe, was given to man to disguise his motives. Be that as it may, I beg most unequivocally to state, that my only inducement in publishing these trifling pages, is the hope that their perusal may prevail on others to ramble along our route, and behold for themselves the quiet loveliness which is lying almost at their' doors, and, Casting to all the liberal air The dust, and din, and steam of town. Excerpt from A History of Surrey A history upon this scale is not intended to compete with the stupendous folios of Manning and Bray, nor with the voluminous gossip of Aubrey's "Perambulation." Neither is it exactly similar in its objects. It aspires to give a brief general view of the history of the county, not of each place in the county, to notice events of general importance in English history which occurred in the county, and to illustrate phases of English history by examples taken from Surrey. Unlike some other counties, Surrey never corresponded to the territory of a people nor of a tribe. When it was a kingdom it was an insignificant dependent State, and only one of its kinglets has been remembered by name. It probably owed its separate existence to its position as a dependency of London, and it bids fair to become a rural suburb of London. But its position near London and the South Coast made striking events to happen in it. Every army, for instance, which ever approached London from the South had to march through Surrey. For many reasons local history is important. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Dariel: A Romance of Surrey Knowing that if I could cross that valley I should probably strike into a bridle-lane which would take me home at leisure, I turned my Old horse, much against his liking, into this dark and downhill course, away from the main road, which according to the wisdom of our forefathers followed the backbone of the ridge. Soon we began to descend steep places broken with slippery falls Of rock, while branches Of thicket and sapling trees Shook hands overhead, and shut out the sky. My horse, who had never been down on his knees, and knew perhaps by instinct the result Of that attitude in the eyes of men, was beginning to tremble exceedingly; and in fairness to him and myself as well, I jumped Off and led him. He looked at me grate fully, and followed without fear, though sometimes sliding with all four feet, and throwing back his head for balance. And perhaps he Observed, as soon as I did, that no horse had ever tried that descent, since the rains of winter washed it. When I was ready to think myself a fool, and wish both of us well out Of it, the sweetest and clearest note, that ever turned the air into melody and the dull world into poetry, came through the arching bowers Of spring, and made the crisp leaves tremulous. Then as a bud, with its point released, breaks into a fountain of flower, the silvery overture broke into a myriad petals Of sensitive song. Excerpt from Surrey The illustrations in this book speak for themselves. The writer feels it no easy undertaking to strike bass chords in prose that may worthily accompany these high notes of Surrey's fame; but he has done his best towards pointing out its special charm of varied formation and surface, here displayed upon the course of excursions made in several directions, so as to bring in all the chief features. To author as well as artist, both at least long sojourners in this choice county that gives homes to many an adopted son, the work has been a labour of love. The moral enforced at once by pen and pencil is that few great cities are so lucky as London in having at its back-doors a playground, pleasure-ground, and garden-ground of such manifold interest and beauty. Excerpt from The Surrey Hills But before the Roman legions ever flashed their shields before the astonished vision of our Iberian ancestors, the North Downs were used as the road from the west of England to the sea-coast at Kent by the British tin merchants, who carried their ware from Cornwall to the port of Sandwich. It was this old track that the pilgrims used in doing penance at the shrine of Canterbury, which the Saxons and the Danes made use of when they fought their bloody battles on the Slopes of Botley and Tandridge Hills, and finally on the slopes of Leith Hill. This old track along the North Downs recalls the great name of England more than anything else in the whole of our British Empire. It is the England of Caesar, of Alfred the Great, of Saint Augustine, of Harold, of William the Conqueror, of Chaucer, of Jack Cade. It is the England of the great barons, who were in their own province stronger than kings. Blechingley, Reigate, Betch worth, Guildford, and Farnham became their castle homes.
