Excerpt from Gregory's Honest Seeds, 1925 Therefore in 1925 of all years, no planter should delay securing his seed supply till planting time as we believe that many of the standard varieties will be exhausted early. Play safe and order your seeds as soon as you receive the catalog. Our business was founded in 1856 giving us a continuous existence as growers and dealers for 69 years. In all these years it has been our aim to furnish our customers with seeds of the highest quality. As experienced farmers we realize how essential it is to furnish seed grown from the most critically selected stock, and we have never knowingly sent an inferior article. A farmer's success depends upon the quantity and quality of the crop harvested; by examining the seed one cannot determine whether it is dead or alive, pure or diseased, true to name or some variety not wan ted. One must depend on his favorite Seedsman for reliability and honesty. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Buchanan's Seeds, 1928 No crop responds more readily than Beans to good soil and cultiva tion. A light, rich, well drained loam which was manured for the previous crop is the most desirable? If too rank manure is used it is apt to make the plant run too much to vine. Beans are very sensitive to both cold and wet and it is useless to plant them before the ground has become dry and warm. The largest returns will result from planting in drills from two to three feet apart. Cover the seed one and one-half to two inches deep and thin the young plants three to six inches apart in the row. If planted in hills, make the hills about two feet apart each way. For succession. Plant at intervals of one to two weeks till midsummer. The plants up to the time of blossoming should have frequent shallow cultivation, but any mutilation of the roots by cultivation after the plants come into bloom is likely to cause the blos soms to blast and so cut off the crop. Cultivation should always be very shallow and it is useless to expect a crop from a field so poorly prepared as to need deep stirring after planting.
