Excerpt from Supplement to the Fishes of India: Being a Natural History of the Fishes Known to Inhabit the Seas and Fresh Waters of India, Burma, and Ceylon In this instance we see a preoperculum with a strong serrated spine at its angle somewhat as observed in the genus Priacanthus, the development of which, and the rate at which it becomes atrophied with age being most probably factors in the amount of protuberance at that spot in older fish. There is likewise a small spine on the sub-opercle, while it is very peculiar that the ventral spine is strongly serrated internally similar to a siluroid. Based on the integrated and holistic approach, the book systematically and comprehensively covers a general account of taxonomical, morphological, anatomical and physiological features of chordates. The text does not restrict discussion only to a representative genus in each class, but also provides knowledge of other important genera, and gives their general account and comparative features to help students understand animal diversity in the phylum. Besides the type study, the book also deals with the developmental and ecological aspects of the genera discussed. The book is intended to fulfill the curriculum need of B.Sc. Zoology, Life Sciences, Biological Sciences and Animal Sciences as well as M.Sc. Zoology students for their core course on chordata (chordates). Additionally, the students appearing for various competitive examinations and entrance test for postgraduate courses in the related fields will find this book useful. KEY FEATURES  Incorporates the topics of modern research such as Fish as Biocontrol Agents, Mimicry in Birds, Nesting and Brooding Behaviour of Birds, and so on.  Compares important genera of the class—morphological, anatomical and adaptive features.  Well-illustrated coloured diagrams with meticulous details and labelling for clear understanding of anatomy.  Important information nested in boxes, points to remember and classification in the form of flow charts add strength to each chapter.  Provides a variety of pedagogically arranged interactive exercises for self assessment—from fill in the blanks, true/false statements, give reasons to MCQs. Fish as Food, Volume I: Production, Biochemistry, and Microbiology discusses progress in the field of fish research. This volume is composed of 17 chapters that cover the biology, biochemistry, world production, cultivation, nutritional composition, and microbiology of fish. The introductory chapters present some examples of the biological basis for the relationships between yield in fishery and economics. The book goes on discussing fish cultivation in Europe, Japan, and South East Asia and the factors to consider in various cultivation methods. The subsequent chapters are devoted to the nutritional value of fish, including its lipid, mineral, water, fatty acid, and protein content. A chapter considers the oxidation properties and rancidity of fish. The book also covers some problems related to fishery business, such as the production of histamine, the occurrence of non-protein nitrogenous compounds, and the rigor mortis. The concluding chapters focus on microbiological aspects of fish production. Discussions on the microbial spoilage of marine fish, crustaceans, and mollusks; the microbiology of shellfish deterioration; and the use of chemical preservatives to control microbiological fish deterioration are also included. The book is an invaluable source primarily to food scientists and also to a wide range of research workers, including biologists, chemists, bacteriologists, parasitologists, oceanographers, nutritionists, and technologists.
