An irresistible mix of imagination, satire, and humor, these stories by acclaimed Japanese author Yasutaka Tsutsui imagine the consequences of a world where the fantastic and the mundane collide. The opening story, “The Dabba Dabba Tree,” details the hilarious side effects of a small conical tree that, when placed at the foot of one’s bed, creates erotic dreams. In “Commuter Army,” a sly commentary on the ludicrousness of war, a weapons supplier becomes an unwilling conscript in a war zone. “The World is Tilting” imagines a floating city that slowly begins to sink on one side, causing its citizens to reorient their daily lives to preserve a semblance of normality. And in the title story, we see how obscenely absurd the environment on Planet Porno appears to a group of scientists. The stories in Salmonella Men on Planet Porno winningly combine madcap hilarity and a sharp eye toward the insanities of contemporary life.

ISBN: 1639361723

A legal analyst for NPR, NBC, and CNN, delves into the facts surrounding what has been called the “worst intelligence disaster in U.S. history”: the case of Robert Hanssen—a Russian spy who was embedded in the FBI for two decades. As a federal prosecutor and the daughter of an FBI agent, Wiehl has an inside perspective. She brings her experience and the ingrained lessons of her upraising to bear on her remarkable exploration of the case, interviewing numerous FBI and CIA agents both past and present as well as the individuals closest to Hanssen. She speaks with his brother-in-law, his oldest and best friend, and even his psychiatrist. In all her conversations, Wiehl is trying to figure out how he did it—and at what cost. But she also pursues questions urgently relevant to our national security today. Could there be another spy in the system? Could the presence of a spy be an even greater threat now than ever before, with the greater prominence cyber security has taken in recent years? Wiehl explores the mechanisms and politics of our national security apparatus and how they make us vulnerable to precisely this kind of threat. Wiehl grew up among the same people with whom Hanssen ingratiated himself, and she has spent her career trying to find the truth within fractious legal and political conflicts. A Spy in Plain Sight reflects on the deeply sown divisions and paranoias of our present day and provides an unparalleled view into the functioning of the FBI, and will stand alongside pillars of the genre like Killers of the Flower Moon, The Spy and the Traitor, and No Place to Hide.

The #1 bestselling book on work life balance. It's time. Time to reclaim your life. Time to reclaim your potential. Time to start thriving, not just surviving. The traditional Bucket List is outdated. In today’s fast-paced world, simply writing down fleeting wishes isn't enough. You need a strategic, structured approach to turn your aspirations into actionable plans and make your dreams come true within the next 6-18 months. This book reveals the approaches that powered great achievements like Elon Musk building Tesla, the Apollo 11 moon landing, and Roald Amundsen's South Pole expedition, demonstrating how these stories and more all use the same concepts and principles that form the backbone of the Dreams List method. Imagine if you could turn an Apollo 11-level of dream into reality and design a life that aligns with your deepest desires. In just three years, with an income no higher than that of a police officer, nurse, or entry-level accountant, Alex Funk did this. He took 86 flights, bought two investment properties, completed a marathon on a treadmill, medaled in a bodybuilding contest, and crossed off 252 other dreams from his list—all before his 23rd birthday. This journey started in 2020, amidst the global pandemic, when he made the unconventional choice to drop out of college and return to his thousand-person hometown. Crafting this remarkable life wasn’t a product of financial leverage but of this revolutionary concept: The Dreams List. The Dreams List is a powerful tool for articulating and pursuing deeply resonant goals. It's not just about listing dreams; it's a methodical approach to breaking down lofty aspirations into manageable, actionable steps. This process transforms vague desires into a clear path forward, guiding each step from current reality to desired future. In this book, you will learn: How to Transform Aspirations into Actionable Plans: Learn the step-by-step method to turn lofty dreams into achievable goals. The Art of Lifestyle Design: Discover how to consciously design a lifestyle that aligns with your deepest desires, rather than default societal expectations. Author: Albert P. Melone
Publisher: Lexington Books
Total Pages: 396
Release: 2024-01-16
Genre: Political Science

In Donald J. Trump and the Politics of Mass Society, Albert P. Melone studies Trump’s behavioral patterns in the fourth year of his presidential term and the three tumultuous years leading to the 2024 presidential election. Melone analyzes the leading explanatory paradigm of American government and politics by utilizing the democratic and aristocratic criticisms of mass society theory to better describe and explain the behavior of Donald Trump and his followers. The initial chapters outline the theoretical framework, the mass movement characteristics, and its membership’s cult-like behavior. Two significant events of the last year of Trump’s administration— the pandemic and the politics surrounding the Black Lives Matter demonstrations— illustrate Trump’s leadership style and the behavioral patterns of the MAGA mass movement. The 2020 election and the attempt to reverse its outcome is a central topic throughout the text, including a discussion of Trump’s second impeachment, the efforts of the House Select Committee on January 6th, voter reactions in the 2022 midterm elections, and the various political and legal attempts to make Trump accountable for his role in the so-called insurrection at the nation’s Capitol. In the final chapter, Melone critically analyzes alternative prescriptions to right the ship of state with a steely eye focused on the realities and possibilities to salvage the democratic republic from an autocratic future.

2021 Special Edition of the American Educational History Journal (The official journal of the Organization of Educational Historians) The American Educational History Journal is a peer-reviewed, national research journal devoted to the examination of educational topics using perspectives from a variety of disciplines. For more information about the Organization of Educational Historians (OEH) and its annual conference, visit the OEH web site at the web address: www.edhistorians.org. This Special Edition of the American Educational History Journal entitled, Snapshots of Educational History: Portraits of the 21st Century Pandemic, is the first special issue in the history of AEHJ. The word, “unprecedented” has literally been used thousands of times during 2020 by news outlets, in our work environments, and in our daily lives. And indeed, the global pandemic has killed over 600,000 in the United States alone at the time of this writing. The public health crisis shut down everything as we knew it. Captives of sheltering-in-place, scores of incidents displaying horrific police brutality against people of color streamed live on airwaves north, south, east, and west, begetting civil unrest across the country. These are circumstances unlike any we have experienced in our lifetimes. As historians, it is critical that we document this time of crisis so that generations to come can bear witness to this time of turmoil and tragedy. With these ideas in mind, the American Educational History Journal sought to hear from historians and other scholars about this unique and devastating time in our country’s history. The Journal honors the traditions of oral history and narrative storytelling as a means to gather the voices of those whose lives have been touched by the COVID-19 crisis, literally everyone around the globe. This special issue deviates a bit from traditional AEHJ requirements in that we specifically invited narratives, not be full-blown historical research studies. The point of this special issue is for authors themselves to serve as the archival material that will benefit future scholars interested in understanding what it meant to live through this health catastrophe while doing the work of educators. We believe we owe it to the historians of the future to share our voices in real time.
