Agent based models have successfully been applied for the petrochemical industry, e.g. for supply chain problems. In this paper we discuss the added value of agent based modeling for this industry from a design perspective. Specifically, we describe a first model intended to help with the conceptual design and system integration of different types of desulfurization technologies for stranded fields. Stranded fields cannot be developed in an economically viable way as particularly the technology needed for sulfur removal from highly contaminated gases can be large and costly. As competition puts tight margins on field development, cutting edge technology may tip the scale for some stranded gas fields. In our model different sulfur removal technologies are modeled as agents. The model generates different technology line ups for upstream networks and provides insight in the way different individual components influence total system performance. This insight allows designers to extract design requirements for technology development and process system integration.
