The Supremes

The Supremes
Author: Mark Ribowsky
Publisher: Da Capo Press, Incorporated
Total Pages: 482
Release: 2009
Genre: Biography & Autobiography
ISBN: 0306815869

Biographer of Phil Spector (He's a Rebel), among others, Ribowsky takes a dishy, insider look at Berry Gordy's making of the Supremes, with some nasty swipes at Diana Ross while elevating Flo Ballard as the trio's martyr. In his detailed look at how Berry engineered his Motown empire, thanks to his smart sisters and a lot of luck and fortuitous pairing of talent, Ribowsky nicely intersperses some hindsight reflections by the main players, such as the brothers Brian and Eddie Holland of the legendary songwriting team with Lamont Dozier, with comparative accounts by Mary Wilson, Ross and others in order to sift the truth from the legend. While the author constantly snipes at Ross for her popping eyes and naked ambition, it was largely her single-minded drive that garnered attention to the trio's early incarnation as the Primettes, and her high girl-woman singing voice that established the Supremes' distinctive sound. Moreover, Ross's influence on Gordy (and his faith in her future solo stardom) motivated him to keep pushing the group into the limelight, in spite of other girl groups that had a bigger top hit following, such as Martha Reeves and the Vandellas. In this engaging, vivacious account, Ribowsky energetically and thoroughly underscores the Supremes' significance as one of the first crossover successes. Synopsis: A young married woman with two daughters deals with her husband's infidelity and his struggle with homosexuality. She seeks spiritual counsel, but when he refuses to cooperate with spiritual leaders-other than on a surface level-she has to make the most important decision of her life. For the author: This book is well written. You obviously have a strong grasp of the English language and vocabulary. I see that you have previously written another book. This one, "The Serpent Beguiled Eve," always retains respect and reverence for the God of the Bible. And yet you have written about a difficult but contemporary issue..... You kept my interest by hinting that things were not to be or were going to get worse, and this bit of mystery led to turning the page to learn, "What happens next?" You do a good job presenting the spiritual truth that God is always with us, ever willing to forgive our sins and lukewarm living, and yet it is squarely on our shoulders to seek Him and to repent when necessary. I trust this is a book that will help others. We are presenting our "Faith-Friendly" Seal for ages 12 plus, and five Doves, our best rating, to this book." -Edwin L. Carpenter, The Dove Foundation, www.dove.org "This story gives readers a taste of the pain caused by infidelity (for the spouses and their children.) It also shows there is hope beyond the grief for those who put their faith in the promises of God. The Serpent Beguiled Eve is recommended reading for anyone who feels alone as they live through and recover from the pain of infidelity." -Kimberly Schimmel, Church Librarian "None of the people here can be blamed – not even her ex-husband David. Everybody in this book is a victim of circumstances beyond their control. Who am I or, who is anybody else to judge? Who among us is perfect? I can only say that I was fully caught up in Acacia's story, I empathize with her, and wish her and her kids – Madison and Mia - all the happiness and success in the world." -Raghav from Bangalore

It has been almost 20 years since the nightmare ended. I have made several attempts to put my story on paper, but as I began reading the depositions, etc., the hurt, anger, betray, darkness and depression all came back. I was reliving everything again. I could hear their voices, their selective memories and sometimes right out lies. Why do this? I finally realized that had I had access to a similar story of the hell I went through, it would have strengthened me and made the ordeal less lonely, and reaffirm that one could succeed and survive. If my story offers comfort or hope to one person who is or has gone through hard times, or help someone understand a person who has, then it will all have been worth it.
