For the Galvani Bicentenary Celebrations, the University of Bologna and its Academy of Sciences singled out subnuclear physics as the field of scientific research to be associated with this important event, as it would best illustrate, for the new generation of students, the challenge inherent in fundamental sciences.Subnuclear physics was born 50 years ago and has represented, ever since, the new frontiers of Galilean science. In his opening lecture delivered on the first day of the new academic year, Professor Antonino Zichichi analytically reviewed the basic conceptual developments and main discoveries achieved in subnuclear physics during the last 50 years. Given the importance of this field of fundamental research, Professor Zichichi was invited to expand the contents of his lecture into a book, and the outcome is this invaluable volume.

This book is based upon lectures presented in June 2007 at the INFN-Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati School on Attractor Mechanism, directed by Stefano Bellucci. The symposium included such prestigious lecturers as S. Ferrara, M. Günaydin, P. Levay, and T. Mohaupt. All lectures were given at a pedagogical, introductory level, which is reflected in the specific "flavor" of this volume. The book also benefits from extensive discussions about, and related reworking of, the various contributions. In addition, this volume contains contributions originating from short presentations of recent original results and an essay on the relation between complexity science and high-energy physics by A. Zichichi. It is the fourth volume in a series of books on the general topics of supersymmetry, supergravity, black holes and the attractor mechanism.

This volume is a collection of lectures given during the 42nd Course of the International School of Subnuclear Physics. The contributions cover the most recent advances in theoretical physics and the latest results from current experimental facilities. In line with one of the aims of the school, which is to encourage and promote young physicists to achieve recognition at an international level, the students' recognized for their research excellence were given the opportunity to publish their work in this volume. Their contributions are joined by those from many distinguished lecturers in the field from around the world.

This book is the proceedings of the International School of Subnuclear Physics, ISSP 2012, 50th Course — ERICE, 23 June 2013 - 2 July 2012. This course was devoted to the celebrations of the 50th Anniversary of the Subnuclear Physics School which was started in 1961 by Antonino Zichichi with John Bell at CERN and formally established in 1962 by Bell, Blackett, Weisskopf, Rabi and Zichichi in Geneva (CERN). The lectures covered the latest and most significant achievements in theoretical and in experimental subnuclear physics.

This unique volume contains a tribute to Lord Patrick M S Blackett through the testimony of Professor Antonino Zichichi, who was one of Blackett's pupils in the experiment at the Sphinx Observatory, Europe's highest lab (3580 meters a.s.l.), at Jungfraujoch. The book presents an overview of Blackett's most significant discoveries, such as the so called 'vacuum polarization' effect, the first example of 'virtual physics' and the 'strange particles', that opened a new horizon towards the existence of the subnuclear universe. After discussing the profound implications of Blackett's pioneering contributions to Subnuclear Physics, the book also recalls his deep interest in the promotion of scientific culture. Blackett was firmly convinced that physicists must be engaged directly to let the people outside our labs know what the role of science is in the progress of our civilisation. In particular, according to Blackett and his friend Bertrand Russell, the Manhattan Project was the example of how the new frontiers of science and technology would have been implemented in the future. In this respect, the role of dedicated institutions is discussed, as a new bridge between traditional university teaching and the big projects for the future of science and technology.

In June 2016, a group of 167 physicists from 31 countries have met in Erice to participate in the 54th Course of the International School of Subnuclear Physics. The main focus of this year's course has been the new frontiers of Physics in the LHC-2 Era and in all labs the world over, as well as the new frontiers in related fields.

In August/September 2000, a group of 80 physicists from 53 laboratories in 15 countries met in Erice, Italy, to participate in the 38th Course of the International School of Subnuclear Physics. This book constitutes the proceedings of that meeting. It focuses on the theoretical investigation of several basic unity issues, including: (1) the understanding of gauge theories in both their continuum and lattice versions; (2) the possible existence and relevance of large extra dimensions together with the resultant lowering of the Planck/string scale to the TeV range; (3) the origin and structure of flavour mixing in the quark and lepton (neutrino) sectors.

This invaluable volume is a collection of conference talks by James D Bjorken, who has made a huge impact on particle physics and the development of the Standard Model. The earliest of these talks was given in 1965, and the latest in 1990. The book provides, from a personal perspective, a glimpse of the complex evolution of the field over those highly productive decades. In Conclusion: A Collection of Summary Talks in High Energy Physics is aimed at a broad spectrum of particle physicists and students, both experimental and theoretical.

Wigner's quasi-probability distribution function in phase space is a special (Weyl) representation of the density matrix. It has been useful in describing quantum transport in quantum optics; nuclear physics; decoherence, quantum computing, and quantum chaos. It is also important in signal processing and the mathematics of algebraic deformation. A remarkable aspect of its internal logic, pioneered by Groenewold and Moyal, has only emerged in the last quarter-century: it furnishes a third, alternative, formulation of quantum mechanics, independent of the conventional Hilbert space, or path integral formulations. In this logically complete and self-standing formulation, one need not choose sides ? coordinate or momentum space. It works in full phase space, accommodating the uncertainty principle, and it offers unique insights into the classical limit of quantum theory. This invaluable book is a collection of the seminal papers on the formulation, with an introductory overview which provides a trail map for those papers; an extensive bibliography; and simple illustrations, suitable for applications to a broad range of physics problems. It can provide supplementary material for a beginning graduate course in quantum mechanics.
