In this Dissertation I present a detailed study of ppbar->WZ production using fully leptonic decays of W and Z bosons with electrons and muons in the final state. Data used for the study were collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab proton-antiproton collider with a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV and correspond to 4.1 fb[surepscript]-1 of integrated luminosity. The most precise measurement of the WZ production cross section is obtained and found to be in a good agreement with the standard model prediction. I also present a search for new phenomena in the WZ production by investigating the coupling between W and Z bosons and by searching for new charged particles that can decay into WZ boson pair. No evidence for new physics is found, and the most stringent limits are set on the anomalous WWZ coupling parameters and masses of charged resonances. This result also sets the stringest limit on one of the possible sources of electroweak symmetry breaking, a low-scale Technicolor with a typical heavy techni-pion hypothesis.

Presented is a measurement of the simultaneous production of a W{sup ±} boson in association with a second weak boson (W{sup ±} or Z°) in p{bar p} collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV. Events are consider with one electron or one muon, missing transverse energy, and at least two hadronic jets. The data were collected by the D0 detector in Run IIa of the Tevatron accelerator and correspond to 1.07 fb−1 of integrated luminosity for each of the two channels (WW/WZ → e[nu]q{bar q} and WW/WZ → [mu][nu]q{bar q}). The cross section for WW + WZ production is measured to be 20.2 ± 2.5(stat) {+-} 3.6(sys) {+-} 1.2(lum) pb with a Gaussian significance of 4.4 standard deviations above the background-only scenario. This measurement is consistent with the Standard Model prediction and represents the first direct evidence for WW and WZ production with semi-leptonic decays at a hadron collider.

This work develops novel data analysis techniques enabling aspects of the Standard Model of particle physics to be tested with unprecedented precision using data from the DZero experiment at the high energy “Tevatron” proton-antiproton collider at Fermilab, Chicago. Vesterinen's measurements of the transverse momentum of Z bosons using the novel variable φ* have exposed deficiencies in the current state-of-the-art theoretical predictions for vector boson production at hadron colliders. These techniques are now being used in the experiments at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and have stimulated considerable interest in the theoretical particle physics community. Furthermore, Vesterinen's measurements of the cross sections for the production of pairs of vector bosons (WZ and ZZ) are to date the most precise ever made.

The search for WW and WZ production in p[anti p] collisions at[radical]s= 1.8 TeV using the CDF and D0 detectors is presented. Three analyses, one concentrating on the leptons+ jets decay channels and two concentrating on the dilepton decay channels are described in detail. Limits on anomalous WW[gamma] and WWZ trilinear gauge boson couplings are presented. Prospects for further study of diboson production and anomalous couplings with the Upgraded Tevatron are also presented.

We examine the phenomenology of the W-Z mass difference as a function of the top quark mass and the Higgs mass. A detailed analysis is presented on how well the mass difference is measurable using the D0 detector at Fermilab. We show that the effective mass distribution of the Z° is not a Breit-Wigner at the Tevatron and present techniques developed for the D0 detector simulation that can be used to reduce the systematic errors in measuring the W-Z mass difference. Scenarios are presented for the integrated luminosities of 10 pb−1 and 100 pb−1 at the Tevatron. It is shown that the Tevatron is competitive with LEP II for integrated luminosities of 100 pb−1 in attainable precisions in this measurement. These considerations argue strongly for the pp option in the Tevatron upgrade program. 17 refs., 14 figs., 2 tabs.

A search for anomalous WW and WZ production in p{anti p} collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV using the D0 detector at Fermilab is presented. With a data sample of p{anti p} → e[nu]jjX events corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 76.5 ± 4.1pb−1. 399 candidate events were identified, from which 387.1 ± 39.8 events were estimated to be background. No deviations from the Standard Model were seen, which predicts 16.2 ± 2.7 events. The 95% CL limit on the cross section [sigma](p{anti p} → W+W−X) was calculated to be 93.8 pb. Limits on the CP-conserving anomalous WW{sub {gamma}} and WWZ coupling parameters were obtained from a binned likelihood fit to the transverse momentum spectrum of the W boson. Assuming that the WW{sub {gamma}} and WWZ coupling parameters are equal, the 95% CL limits on the CP-conserving couplings are -0.56
