The general approach, physical concepts, and methods employed in the actual development of the equipment are discussed. The equipment and its capabilities are described. A brief summary of concurrent reports that describe results of studies of response in granular media is presented. The summary indicates that the significant parameters have been correctly identified from theoretical mechanics and suitably measured, since results demonstrate relationships between stress-strain behavior and propagating waves in laboratory devices. The report also summarizes the broad range of protective construction problems which lend themselves to study in this equipment. These include such studies as the effects of reflection phenomena, the effects of layered media, soil-structure interaction in a high-stress field, and the evaluation of disturbances in free-field conditions caused by the presence of a gauge. The latter is shown to be possible by virtue of the ability to measure soil response without placing a gauge in the soil or attaching one to the sample. (Author).

A general-purpose test facility for determining the one-dimensional compression characteristics of soils subjected to impulse-type loads has been developed in order to help satisfy the ever-increasing demand for reliable soil-property data required in support of a wide variety of nuclear-weapons-effects-related problems. The design, fabrication, installation, and evaluation of the various elements which together comprise the test facility were accomplished. The various considerations involved in the design and evaluation of the newly developed test facility are discussed in detail, thus providing some insight into the types of factors which affect the experimental-accuracy capability of a one-dimensional compression test facility and thereby the reliability of the data obtained under any particular set of conditions. The objective of the study was to investigate and verify model-to-prototype scaling relations for blast loaded buried arches that respond both elastically and inelastically. Four geometrically similar, semicircular aluminum alloy arches with 4-, 8-, 12-, and 36-inch diameters were buried in dense dry sand and subjected to air-blast-induced loads on the surface. The tests were conducted at the Large Blast Load Generator located at the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station. The results of two series of tests, each consisting of 3 repeated shots, ranging from 70 to 300 psi, are presented. Within the range of parameters investigated, the scaling of the dependent variables were adequately verified. These variables included acceleration, velocity, displacement, thrust, and bending moment. (Author).
