This report summarizes research on sound absorption performed over a three-year period. This research included measurements of the rotational relaxation time in air at elevated temperatures and measurements of the vibrational relaxation of water vapor during collisions with water vapor, oxygen, nitrogen, and argon. As a result of these measurements the range of temperatures over which these basic physical properties can be accurately predicted over the temperature range normally encountered on the surface of the earth. References to the work published in the open literature is given as well as a brief description of how this work contributed to the development of a new procedure to predict sound absorption in still air.

This report, Volume 4, presents the results (1961-1962) of several studies of the interaction between air flow and airborne sound in a duct. Three projects are discussed: (1) Part A: The effects of various sound fields on the excitation of the boundary layer of a flat plate are discussed relative to the stagnation point and the boundary layer itself. (2) Part B: The change in the cross-sectional distribution of the sound pressure in an absorbent duct with air flow is examined with respect to shape of the velocity profile of the flow. (3) Part C: The dependence of the acoustic radiation impedance of a tube orifice during flow conditions is investigated as a function of the flow velocity and turbulence level. Results show that as the flow increases the radiation impedance decreases.

This monograph is devoted to the systematic presentation of the theory of sound wave propagation in layered structures. These structures can be man-made, such as ultrasonic filters, lenses, surface-wave delay lines, or natural media, such as the ocean and the atmosphere, with their marked horizontal stratification. A related problem is the propagation of elastic (seismic) waves in the earth's crust These topics have been treated rather completely in the book by L. M. Brek hovskikh, Waves in Layered Media, the English version of the second edition of which was published by Academic Press in 1980. Due to progress in experimental and computer technology it has become possible to analyze the influence of factors such as medium motion and density stratification upon the propagation of sound waves. Much attention has been paid to propagation theory in near-stratified media, Le. , media with small deviations from strict stratification. Interesting results have also been obtained in the fields of acoustics which had been previously considered to be "completely" developed. For these reasons, and also because of the inflow of researchers from the related fields of physics and mathematics, the circle of persons and research groups engaged in the study of sound propagation has rather expanded.
