While there are many companies in Alberta involved in secondary manufacturing of solid wood products, little information was available on the nature, extent, and activities of the various industry sectors involved. This report identifies the present status of such products, as well as both existing and potential markets. Information is given on each of the secondary manufacturing industry sectors, the types of companies involved and the raw material consumed, and the level of activity of the sector. The results of market studies in Toronto and the United States Midwest are summarized with a commentary on the potential for Alberta manufacturers. A list of manufacturers contacted is included, with name and address of company, the nature of its business, and its size.

A census survey of the converted wood products industry of Newfoundland was conducted during the summer of 1988 to collect data to permit an analysis of the current size, structure and economic impact of the industry. The major indicators used include employment, income, value of shipments and value added. The industry was defined using the Standard Industrial Classification System, and a list of 78 firms was compiled using telephone directories and 2 government publications.
