Excerpt from Studies in the Principles of Geography: Following the Problem Method This little book represents an attempt to develop a working knowledge of some of the principles of geography through the problem method of attack. It is the outgrowth of classroom experience and has been in the process of evolution through a number of years. The method of attack and development follows as nearly as possible the natural steps in the thinking process. The aim has been not to sacrifice pedagogical considerations for the sake of a logical arrangement, but to correlate the two in the best possible way. It will be noted that there arc ten groups of problems. Each group is introduced by the statement of the large idea, the central thought running through the entire series of problems. The main problems of this book involve what may be considered a list of basic minimum essentials in the principles of geography. The conclusions, which are an essential part of each problem, require the formal statement of a large list of geographic principles, each vitally connected up with some problem full of life interest. The related problems are calculated to give the student drill on principles previously learned, and to afford opportunity to recognize old principles in new associations. Frequently it will be found that the related problem is really a corollary to the main problem, rather than a mere practice exercise. It may not be out of place here to state that this syllabus was awarded first place by the National Council of Normal School Presidents and Principals in a competition among syllabi submitted from thirty-seven normal schools in twenty-four states. Excerpt from Business Geography Modern Geography has become a definite science. Its principles are so well defined that a knowledge of the physical conditions under which a race has lived and now lives gives a reasonably reliable indication as to the capacity, activity, occupations, and business relations of that race. In studying this growing science the first step is to understand the main principles. That is the reason for Part I of this book. A second step is to apply the principles to concrete problems as is done in Part II. There the community engaged in a particular line of activity is taken as the unit in order that the geographical relationships may first be studied in relatively simple forms before going on to the more complex regional studies of Parts III and IV. In the regional chapters the aim is to give a clear conception of the way in which geographic conditions influence the products of a region, the capacity of the people, the direction in which their activities are turned, and the nature and extent of their business relations with other regions. The present book stands in an intermediate position between two books by Huntington and Gushing, namely Commercial and Industrial Geography (World Book Company), and Principles of Human Geography (John Wiley & Sons, Inc.). Although each is complete in itself and occupies a separate field, the three books form a connected series. If the students who use Business Geography have not already taken a course in Commercial Geography in the seventh, eighth or ninth grade, the teacher is advised to have them use the first of the books named above and some other books such as J.R. Smiths Commerce and Industry (Henry Holt & Co.), for supplementary reading. If the pupils are to get a thorough grounding in the broader principles of geography in general and thereby see how business geography is related to the physical, sociological, and political phases of the subject, the teacher is advised to supplement the present book with a course based on some one of the several textbooks that especially stress physiography, and on Principles of Human Geography, and Bowman's The New World (World Book Company). Not illustrated. 1913 edition. Excerpt: ... in the pursuit of further geographical studies, or in occasional need of interpreting these data in general reading. Cultural aims.--Turning to those aims of geography that consider something beyond mere utility, namely, intellectual pleasure, mental strength, refinement, and growth of character, the subject, it will be found, has much to offer. It should be noted that some of the preceding utilitarian aims have also a cultural side, as the development of the social sense and patriotism, and the appreciation of history and literature. Geography contributes to the enjoyment of the natural elements and forces, the beauty of scenery, and the ways of life of the people, both in our local walks and in more extended travels. One should read the geography of the places to be visited, their history and literature, if one wishes to get the most pleasure and satisfaction out of travel. The subject of geography is intrinsically very interesting. Books of travel, exploration, and of descriptive, general geography may be very pleasant and entertaining reading. In fact, in the beginning when geography had not yet been accredited as a distinct subject for schools, and efforts were made to introduce it, this was one of the chief arguments of its advocates. Sir Thomas Elyot, in the Govemour, 1531, writing about cosmography (what geography was then), says: "For what pleasure it is, in one hour to behold those realms, cities, seas, rivers, and mountains that uneth scarcely in an old man's life can not be journeyed and pursued! What incredible delight is taken in beholding the diversities of people, beasts, fowls, fishes, trees, fruits, and herbs: to know the sundry manners and conditions of people, and the variety of their natures, and that in a warm study...
