More than ten years have passed since the untimely death of King-Sun Fu, one of the great pioneers in the field of pattern recognition. It was he, more than any other single individual, who nurtured the field during its formative years, and set the tone and tempo for others to follow. This book is dedicated to his memory. This book contains 11 chapters by authors who knew King-Sun Fu and in varying degrees interacted with him. The articles span the field of pattern recognition in its current state, and cover such diverse topics as neural nets, covariance propagation, genetic selection, shape description, characteristic views for 3D modeling, face recognition, speech recognition, and machine translation. In tone they vary from the highly theoretical to the applied. Their presentation here is a testimonial, by his former colleagues and friends, to the pioneer who did so much to bring pattern recognition to its position as a recognized discipline world-wide.

The very significant advances in computer vision and pattern recognition and their applications in the last few years reflect the strong and growing interest in the field as well as the many opportunities and challenges it offers. The second edition of this handbook represents both the latest progress and updated knowledge in this dynamic field. The applications and technological issues are particularly emphasized in this edition to reflect the wide applicability of the field in many practical problems. To keep the book in a single volume, it is not possible to retain all chapters of the first edition. However, the chapters of both editions are well written for permanent reference.

Both pattern recognition and computer vision have experienced rapid progress in the last twenty-five years. This book provides the latest advances on pattern recognition and computer vision along with their many applications. It features articles written by renowned leaders in the field while topics are presented in readable form to a wide range of readers. The book is divided into five parts: basic methods in pattern recognition, basic methods in computer vision and image processing, recognition applications, life science and human identification, and systems and technology. There are eight new chapters on the latest developments in life sciences using pattern recognition as well as two new chapters on pattern recognition in remote sensing.

"Foreword by Ray Kurzweil, author, The Age of Spiritual Machines ""Virtual humans"" may seem like something out of science fiction, but they are already here. Companies use them as website hosts, individuals use them as personal assistants, and people interact with them in computer games, educational applications, and many other arenas. The possibilities are limitless, but the most amazing thing is that anyone can create a ""V-human"" from scratch. Virtual Humans gives not just start-to-finish instructions for designing a charming synthetic person, but also a CD-ROM containing the tools and techniques to make it real. Readers will learn how to: * create their own authentic and engaging personalities * apply VH technology to business and individual projects * add synthetic voices and realistic faces to virtual humans * use personality psychology and humor in character design * design advanced emotion expression engines This book-and-CD package is the first of its kind and a landmark on a par with the first build-your-own-Web-site products. Readers will be among the first to create ultra-realistic, versatile V-human personalities, and will start well ahead of what is soon to be a tidal wave of worldwide interest."

An autobiographical story, Cobblestones describes the life story of the author from his early days in Germany, his emigration during the Nazi period, his separation from his family and his difficulties in obtaining a visa to come to the United States, resolved finally only through the intercession of Professor Albert Einstein. In his new country he had to learn English and adapt to the new countrys culture in Waterford, NY, a small central New York village, and later Cohoes, NY where he graduated as valedictorian of his high school class. After college and graduate school, he joined industry and within a decade rose to head a department with over 100 persons. This was followed by a move to academia - New York University, then Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and finally Rutgers University, from where he retired. In industry he designed one of the early computers (for which he received the IEEE Pioneer Award). He was active in some of the leading computer professional organizations, traveled widely in the US, Europe, Asia, and South America, and received many awards. Just prior to retirement he founded and successfully led a pioneering software company for eight years.
