Susan Wadley first visited Karimpur—the village "behind mud walls" made famous by William and Charlotte Wiser—as a graduate student in 1967. She returned often, adding her observations and experiences to the Wisers' field notes from the 1920s and 1930s. In this long-awaited book, Wadley gives us a work of unprecedented scope: a portrait of an Indian village as it has changed over a sixty-year period. She hears of changes in agriculture, labor relations, education, and the family. But Karimpur's residents do not speak with one voice in describing the ways their lives have changed—viewpoints vary considerably depending on the speaker's gender, economic status, and caste. Using cultural documents such as songs and stories, as well as data on household budgets and farming practices, Wadley examines what it means to be poor or rich, female or male. She demonstrates that the forms of subordination prescribed for women are paralleled by those prescribed for lower castes. Villagers also speak of political struggles in India, and of the importance of religion when confronting change. Their stories, songs, and life histories reveal the rich fabric of Karimpur and show how much can be learned from listening to its people.

Rezension / Literaturbericht aus dem Jahr 1997 im Fachbereich Ethnologie / Volkskunde, Note: sehr gut, Freie Universität Berlin (Institut für Ethnologie), Veranstaltung: Gender Studies in Suedasien, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Im Rahmen des Regionalseminars “Gender Studies” in Südasien beschäftigte ich mich mit dem Buch “Struggling with destiny in Karimpur, 1925 - 1984” der Ethnologin Susan S. Wadley. In diesem Buch wertet die Autorin langjährige Beobachtungen und Erfahrungen in Karimpur, Indien aus. Ihren eigenen Aussagen zufolge ist Karimpur, gelegen im Distrikt Mainpuri im indischen Bundesstaat Uttar Pradesh, “the site of a truly long-term study”. Der amerikanische Kontakt und die Beobachtung begannen 1925 mit Charlotte und William Wiser, die dem Ort den Namen Karimpur gaben. 1967 traf Wadley selbst das erste Mal in Karimpur ein und begegnete den Wisers, deren Forschung sie dann über mehrere Jahre fortführte (weitere Aufenthalte u.a. 1974-75 und 1983-84). Das Buch entstand in Folge ihrer Feldforschung 1983-84 ursprünglich als Studie über sozialen Wandel, der seit dem ersten amerikanischen Kontakt in Karimpur beobachtet wurde. Dabei will Wadley die Veränderungen mit Hilfe der Lebensgeschichten der Bewohner darstellen. Die Lebensgeschichten werden ergänzt durch orale Traditionen, Geburts-, Bevölkerungsstatistiken und Untersuchungen über die Veränderungen der Arbeitsbedingungen. Im Folgenden werde ich ihre wichtigsten Aussagen zusammenfassen und eine kurze Kritik geben. Ausführlicher gehe ich auf das Kapitel 2 “There Should Be Control” ein, da es mir für das Verständnis der sozialen Beziehungen in Karimpur am wichtigsten erscheint. This book investigates the roots of rapid economic growth of India in recent decades, by exploring historical processes from the late colonial period. Based upon decades-long archival and field research, this book deals with the period from the late nineteenth century to 2013 and offers an integral viewpoint of the economic history of India. While critiquing the conventional understanding that links recent economic growth only with the development of high-tech, export-oriented service sectors under the liberalised economy, the book suggests deeper and wider roots of development that had a cumulative effect in three stages. First, the agrarian development and rural socio-economic changes from the end of the nineteenth century. Second, the state-led import-substitution industrialisation since 1950 that established the industrial foundations for future economic growth. Third, the economic reforms since 1991 that helped technology-intensive industries find new markets with improved quality of production.
