Walker River is the principle source of inflow for Walker Lake. It also provides irrigation water for several agricultural valleys. To balance the demands for water to support local agriculture, preserve the ecosystem and maintain lake levels an ongoing investigation is taking place to evaluate the effectiveness of proposed management alternatives. The objective of the analysis is to help the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation quantify potential river gains and losses by using observed streamflow data, surface water diversions and crop consumption requirements. The analysis provides a first-order estimate of net gain and loss based on percentages of streamflow.
