A revelatory and timely look at how technology boosts our cognitive abilities—making us smarter, more productive, and more creative than ever It’s undeniable—technology is changing the way we think. But is it for the better? Amid a chorus of doomsayers, Clive Thompson delivers a resounding “yes.” In Smarter Than You Think, Thompson shows that every technological innovation—from the written word to the printing press to the telegraph—has provoked the very same anxieties that plague us today. We panic that life will never be the same, that our attentions are eroding, that culture is being trivialized. But, as in the past, we adapt—learning to use the new and retaining what is good of the old. Smarter Than You Think embraces and extols this transformation, presenting an exciting vision of the present and the future.

This book will provide one of the first comprehensive approaches to the study of smart city governments with theories and concepts for understanding and researching 21st century city governments innovative methodologies for the analysis and evaluation of smart city initiatives. The term “smart city” is now generally used to represent efforts that in different ways describe a comprehensive vision of a city for the present and future. A smarter city infuses information into its physical infrastructure to improve conveniences, facilitate mobility, add efficiencies, conserve energy, improve the quality of air and water, identify problems and fix them quickly, recover rapidly from disasters, collect data to make better decisions, deploy resources effectively and share data to enable collaboration across entities and domains. These and other similar efforts are expected to make cities more intelligent in terms of efficiency, effectiveness, productivity, transparency, and sustainability, among other important aspects. Given this changing social, institutional and technology environment, it seems feasible and likeable to attain smarter cities and by extension, smarter governments: virtually integrated, networked, interconnected, responsive, and efficient. This book will help build the bridge between sound research and practice expertise in the area of smarter cities and will be of interest to researchers and students in the e-government, public administration, political science, communication, information science, administrative sciences and management, sociology, computer science, and information technology. As well as government officials and public managers who will find practical recommendations based on rigorous studies that will contain insights and guidance for the development, management, and evaluation of complex smart cities and smart government initiatives.

In this IBM® Redbooks® publication, we discuss and describe the positioning, functions, capabilities, and advanced programming techniques for IBM InfoSphereTM Streams (V1). See: http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/abstracts/sg247970.html for the newer InfoSphere Streams (V2) release. Stream computing is a new paradigm. In traditional processing, queries are typically run against relatively static sources of data to provide a query result set for analysis. With stream computing, a process that can be thought of as a continuous query, that is, the results are continuously updated as the data sources are refreshed. So, traditional queries seek and access static data, but with stream computing, a continuous stream of data flows to the application and is continuously evaluated by static queries. However, with IBM InfoSphere Streams, those queries can be modified over time as requirements change. IBM InfoSphere Streams takes a fundamentally different approach to continuous processing and differentiates itself with its distributed runtime platform, programming model, and tools for developing continuous processing applications. The data streams consumable by IBM InfoSphere Streams can originate from sensors, cameras, news feeds, stock tickers, and a variety of other sources, including traditional databases. It provides an execution platform and services for applications that ingest, filter, analyze, and correlate potentially massive volumes of continuous data streams.

This book is intended to provide a systematic overview of so-called smart techniques, such as nature-inspired algorithms, machine learning and metaheuristics. Despite their ubiquitous presence and widespread application to different scientific problems, such as searching, optimization and /or classification, a systematic study is missing in the current literature. Here, the editors collected a set of chapters on key topics, paying attention to provide an equal balance of theory and practice, and to outline similarities between the different techniques and applications. All in all, the book provides an unified view on the field on intelligent methods, with their current perspective and future challenges.
