The year 2015 marks the 50th anniversary of the passage of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) of 1965—a landmark decision that made the United States the diverse nation it is today. In The Law that Changed the Face of America, congressional journalist and immigration expert Margaret Sands Orchowski delivers a never before told story of how immigration laws have moved in constant flux and revision throughout our nation’s history. Exploring the changing immigration environment of the twenty-first century, Orchowski discusses globalization, technology, terrorism, economic recession, and the expectations of the millennials. She also addresses the ever present U.S. debate about the roles of the various branches of government in immigration; and the often competitive interests between those who want to immigrate to the United States and the changing interests, values, ability, and right of our sovereign nation states to choose and welcome those immigrants who will best advance the country.

They're too broken not to find each other, he's too broken to make it out alive. Ina-Baby is a collection of linked love stories told in reverse order of mutual abuse. He's pathetically suicidal and she's a bit of a sadomasochist though not one to feel sorry or take shit from anybody, let alone a crybaby like him. What could've ever drawn them together in the first place? Well, it's kinda-sorta like they're star-crossed lovers if they weren't as completely effed in the head as they are, and as effed in the head as they are for each other. She's got her whiskey and sweet red wine and he's got his SURGE!. She's a child of divorce, which is sad, but no real explanation, and he's got a list of childhood trauma that's too long to be believed (and history of histrionics), which he won't stop reliving on the page and in caffeinated temper tantrums. In the end, which is the beginning, he can't let go of the past, and she can't let go of the facts. It's unclear which is healthier everyone concerned--for two of them to stay together, for them to get as far away from each other as they can. But hey, it's a fun ride along the way (said no one who's ever been in an abusive relationship like this).

No institution has so captivated and intrigued Americans as the hospital. It is where the miracles of modern medicine meet the mysteries of the human body. It is where life begins-- and often ends. It embodies our hopes and fears, our capacity for heroism and compassion. Now, based on an unforgettable series of first-person narratives, LIFE AND DEATH takes us behind the scenes for an intimate and inspiring look at one of the best hospitals in the country, New York's Columbia-Presbyterian. We witness the pressure-packed decision-making process of the hospital's elite heart transplant team; spend a morning in the delivery room as twelve new lives enter the world; share the emergency staff's struggle to care for one midsummer night's wounded in New York City. From the ravages of AIDS and cocaine to the rigors of internship to the remarkable redemptive powers of our great healers, LIFE AND DEATH captures the entire range of human experience -- the poignancy, pain, and humor that are all part of a day's work at this extraordinary institution.

"The present volume is meant for the reader who wishes the highlights rather than the details of the Negro's life in the United States. It is not intended as a formal history nor is it primarily a study of the race problem. Rather I have tried to present the historical facts that are most important to an understanding of Negro-white relations today and to interpret these facts so as to increase such understanding"--Foreword, page v.

Paul and Ina Bartel loved China and loved the Chinese people. It was only natural, for their parents on both sides were also missionaries to China. Paul first met Ina at the missionary boarding school, but it would be years before they married. The lot of pioneer missionaries in early 20th-century China was grim. Ragtag bandit bands constantly clashed with undisciplined soldiers. Blood flowed. Bullets flew. But that did not deter Paul and Ina, for the situation was even worse for Chinese Christians. In many places, martyrdom was something to be expected. The lives of the Bartels can be described only partially in these pages. Marked by incredible commitment, relentless vision and godly grace, the influence of Paul and Ina Bartel continues to reach the worldwide community of their beloved Chinese.
