The seventh volume in Knopf’s critically acclaimed Complete Lyrics series, published in Johnny Mercer’s centennial year, contains the texts to more than 1,200 of his lyrics, several hundred of them published here for the first time. Johnny Mercer’s early songs became staples of the big band era and were regularly featured in the musicals of early Hollywood. With his collaborators, who included Richard A. Whiting, Harry Warren, Hoagy Carmichael, Jerome Kern, and Harold Arlen, he wrote the lyrics to some of the most famous standards, among them, “Too Marvelous for Words,” “Jeepers Creepers,” “Skylark,” “I’m Old-Fashioned,” and “That Old Black Magic.” During a career of more than four decades, Mercer was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Song an astonishing eighteen times, and won four: for his lyrics to “On the Atchison, Topeka, and the Santa Fe” (music by Warren), “In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening” (music by Carmichael), and “Moon River” and “Days of Wine and Roses” (music for both by Henry Mancini). You’ve probably fallen in love with more than a few of Mercer’s songs–his words have never gone out of fashion–and with this superb collection, it’s easy to see that his lyrics elevated popular song into art.

At long last, the first serious biography of entertainment legend Lena Horne -- the celebrated star of film, stage, and music who became one of the first African-American icons. At the 2001 Academy Awards, Halle Berry thanked Lena Horne for paving the way for her to become the first black recipient of a Best Actress Oscar. Though limited, mostly to guest singing appearances in splashy Hollywood musicals, "the beautiful Lena Horne," as she was often called, became a pioneering star for African Americans in the 1940s and fifties. Now James Gavin, author of Deep in a Dream: The Long Night of Chet Baker, draws on a wealth of unmined material and hundreds of interviews -- one of them with Horne herself -- to give us the defining portrait of an American icon. Gavin has gotten closer than any other writer to the celebrity who has lived in reclusion since 1998. Incorporating insights from the likes of Ruby Dee, Tony Bennett, Diahann Carroll, Arthur Laurents, and several of Horne's fellow chorines from Harlem's Cotton Club, Stormy Weather offers a fascinating portrait of a complex, even tragic Horne -- a stunning talent who inspired such giants of showbiz as Barbra Streisand, Eartha Kitt, and Aretha Franklin, but whose frustrations with racism, and with tumultuous, root-less childhood, left wounds too deep to heal. The woman who emerged was as angry as she was luminous. From the Cotton Club's glory days and the back lots of Hollywood's biggest studios to the glitzy but bigoted hotels of Las Vegas's heyday, this behind-the-scenes look at an American icon is as much a story of the limits of the American dream as it is a masterful, ground-breaking biography.

"Life is a series of attempts to accomplish specific goals" and within our personal attempts we are forced to make many choices. What seems to be a minor decision today can actually be the one decision that changes the rest of your life. The little "white" lie we told, that new girl at work that your wife will never know about, or the one night you decided to drink and drive. It's not always fair because some decisions have to be made in the matter of seconds. These are the ones that tend to hinder us for a lifetime. Your life is your Tightrope, and how you choose to walk it today, will affect your position tomorrow. Majority of us have hit a point in our lives when we're not quite sure which way to go. This normally begins from the moment high school is over. Follow these characters as they journey down there own path of reaching adult hood. Terrill, Darnell and Shannon are individually very different. But once the crew is together the bond is quite evident. More than just friends, they were family. Family is the one thing that holds some of us together, as well as the one thing that tears some of us apart. We never know how strong our bonds are to one another until adversity hits. We never know if we're all meant to go the same direction until there is a fork in the road. Ask yourself are you proud of the decisions you've made? "Life is delicate and with temptations always lined up to pull you off course, you must remain stable while walking down your own TIGHTROPE."

Victory in The Storm “Fighting the good fight of faith.” 1 Timothy 6:12A KJV Victory in The Storm is an exciting and inspirational book that will help you through your fight with cancer or any illness. What you learn in this book will build up your faith and strengthen you as you heal. What I wrote is what I learned after the doctors wanted to pull the plug on me. What I wrote here is how I was able to inspire others as I got my healing victory. My prayer as you read this inspirational book is that it will build up your faith. As you read this book. I pray you will build up an expectancy and an atmosphere for miracles. As your faith increases, you will be stirred up and you will get your breakthrough. Another place you can build up your faith is by reading the Bible. Romans 10:17 ESV says, “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” I once was in ICU for 37 days, 10 of them in a coma. The doctors gave me little hope. Several times they asked my family to pull the plug on me. The doctors gave me a death sentence, but God gave me a life sentence. He always has the final say. God said “your time, Butch Dias, is not up. You need to tell the world of My story.” I had to make a conscious choice not to listen to the doctor’s report. I read my Bible and researched every healing scripture there was in it. I spent time memorizing them and praying them over myself. I had many Bible believing friends that stuck with me and encouraged me, and prayed me through the bad days. I would learn to stand on the Word of God and in tougher times, stand more. I was blessed to have a great support system. People prayed relentlessly for me. They had “Pit Bull” faith. They would not let go of my healing promises. Miracle after miracle happened and I had to step out in faith to survive. The more I stepped out in faith, the more I got well. I learned that baby steps were still steps forward. Baby steps were just building blocks of faith. This book was written with the love and compassion to help hurting people with what I learned. This is how I found victory for my situation. Sometimes you have to position yourself to receive. A tight end in football has to run the right route to be able to receive the pass from the quarterback. He has to position himself to receive the ball or he will never get his touchdown. By releasing our faith we can create an atmosphere to receive our miracle. Praying for your miracle today and believing for your healing. Sincerely yours in Christ, Butch Dias Matthew 14:12 NASB, “When He went ashore, He saw a large crowd, and felt compassion for them and healed their sick.”
