"As the evidence-base for medical music therapy has increased, so has the demand for music therapy services. Today, medical music therapists work in hospitals, cancer centers, and rehabilitation centers across the U.S. providing services to populations that would have been unheard of even a decade ago. This book brings together cutting edge practices from medical music therapy clinicians and educators across the country and provides information on evidence-based clinical applications with a variety of medical populations, program development, student supervision, and psycho-social/culturally driven, patient-family centered care." -- Publisher's description.

Acupuncture can be a very effective way of strengthening the body's resistance to illness, and of eliminating potentially harmful pathogens. This book provides a complete overview of the principles involved in distinguishing between different syndromes of illness in patients, and of selecting and administering appropriate treatments. The book describes the functions of acupuncture within the wider context of traditional Chinese medicine, and explains the principles involved in identifying and treating different illnesses and complaints. A large portion of the book is devoted to describing how to diagnose and treat more than 130 different conditions, including headaches and angina, asthma, depressive disorders, dementia, and acne. This comprehensive textbook, compiled by the prestigious China Beijing International Acupuncture Training Center (CBIATC), under the editorial directorship of leading Chinese practitioners Zhu Bing and Wang Hongcai, is an invaluable reference for the advanced student or practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine.

Good health can be considered one of the most fundamental resources for social and economic prosperity. While the goal to improve average levels of population health is important, there has been an increasing focus on disparities at national and European levels. Improvements have been seen over the past few decades in both health status and living and working conditions has widened tremendously in the European Union (EU) and will continue to do so as it goes through the enlargement process. The diversity in living conditions has translated into diversity in patterns of health across the region. Inequalities in income, education, housing and employment affect population health, both directly (for example, good housing reduces risks associated with poor health) and indirectly through psychosocial factors (such as stress). From the life course perspective, individuals are affected by different sets of risks related to disease and illness; certain diseases and causes of health are more likely to affect young people, whereas the majority are associated with older ages. Investigating differences in health status within and between European countries provides the focus of this report. The relationship between living conditions, socioeconomic factors and health is discussed and analysed with the objective of stimulating a debate and policy action for creating a healthier and more equitable society. We aim to present an overview of key issues and not comprehensive literature review or exhaustive analysis of the topics involved.

"With the rapid growth of the aging population, an increasing number of persons are diagnosed each year with age-related disorders. The use of music can do much to enhance the plan of care for aging adults. The clinical and musical expertise of a board-certified music therapist is always preferable. There are times, however, when a music therapist is not available and healthcare workers may find music interventions useful for clients--especially those who may be experiencing pain or stress. The primary purpose of this handbook is to educate music therapists and healthcare professionals about the uses and evidence-based benefits of music therapy practices with older adults--those in hospice care, with Alzheimer's disease, in health and wellness programs, and in intergenerational programs. For each of the adult populations, the handbook includes chapters on practical introductory information, reviews of related music therapy research, and clinical applications of evidence-based music therapy practice. The applications are hierarchically ordered for healthcare providers and board-certified music therapists who have advanced skills in music and working with older adults. With these research-based applications, music can become an integral part of the comprehensive care plan for adult clients." -- Publisher's description.
