Excerpt from Steele and the Sentimental Comedy There is an essay of Goldsmith's, on the theatrical productions of his time, which a writer on the Sentimental Comedy would like to quote in extenso. And for this reason - that this kind of comedy, which Goldsmith described with great humour but with perfect justice in the piece in question, is a thing exceedingly difficult to define. Perhaps it is too near to us. We know it too well to be able to define it. Every one can recognize it at a glance. If you dip into a play written after 1710 or so, and find such a passage as this: - Oh, my child! my child! [Embraces her, and a comic servant or trusted butler sheds manly tears.] Child. All-gracious Heaven! is it possible! Do I embrace my father? you will know without the need of any definition that you have struck a genuine spring of that dolorous fountain of sham tears and sham wit - La Comedie Larmoyanie, The Comedy of Sighs (that shall be changed to cries of joy in the Fifth Act), the subject of our essay - The Sentimental Comedy invented by the great essayist Sir Richard Steele. This is how Goldsmith describes it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Mice and Men: A Romantic Comedy in Four Acts And who does not foresee the end - the middle-aged doctrinaire, cloaked and hatted, faltering slowly down the garden path, opening the wicket, and turning, ere he utterly effaces himself, an almost happy smile towards the house - the house that was to have been his and hers - from which are wafted the strains of "My love is like a red, red rose," sung as a duet by the two young people? This is a story that must have been exploited in a score of sentimental books and sentimental plays. In real life, of course it would be impossible. But these objections to "Mice and Men" are made by me merely in cold blood: I had no glimmer of them during the play's procedure. I surrendered whole-heartedly, taking the play for all it was worth, smiling and sighing and brushing away tears with the best of them. The reason why I was able to enjoy the sentiment and sentimentality of this play is simply that Mrs. Ryley has a genuine talent for sentimental comedy. Sense of humour has not been denied to Mrs Ryley. It prevents her from ever becoming maudlin. Her sentiment is always airy and wholesome. Moreover, she can write. What a relief, after that illiterate slush to which we have so long been accustomed to find dialogue that is really like human speech, yet terser and more distinguished than human speech! Even by mere reason of its literary style, "Mice and Men" is delightful, and rare among plays. But the chief ingredient of its delightful rarity is that it is a fairy story conceived in a sincere spirit - a fairy story in which I can believe. Excerpt from Susanna Shakespeare: A Romantic Comedy in Four Acts Robin Far from thy kinsmen cast thee! Wrath not thy neighbor next thee! In a good corn-country thrust thee! And Sit down, Robin, and rest thee! He has looked over the half-door, while singing, and seeing no one at home, reaches over, undoes the latch, enters half-furtively, and seats himself in the armchair, stretching out his feet to the blaze. From the kitchen enters Timothy, attracted by the noise. He is a small slender old man, with a slightly halting gait. He looks about unseeingly, closes the unlatched half-door, and on turning discovers the motionless Robin.
