This volume contains a selection of invited papers, presented to the fourth International Conference on Statistical Data Analysis Based on the L1-Norm and Related Methods, held in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, from August 4–9, 2002. The contributions represent clear evidence to the importance of the development of theory, methods and applications related to the statistical data analysis based on the L1-norm.

This monograph is concerned with the fitting of linear relationships in the context of the linear statistical model. As alternatives to the familiar least squared residuals procedure, it investigates the relationships between the least absolute residuals, the minimax absolute residual and the least median of squared residuals procedures. It is intended for graduate students and research workers in statistics with some command of matrix analysis and linear programming techniques.

Cuts and metrics are well-known objects that arise - independently, but with many deep and fascinating connections - in diverse fields: in graph theory, combinatorial optimization, geometry of numbers, combinatorial matrix theory, statistical physics, VLSI design etc. This book presents a wealth of results, from different mathematical disciplines, in a unified comprehensive manner, and establishes new and old links, which cannot be found elsewhere. It provides a unique and invaluable source for researchers and graduate students. From the Reviews: "This book is definitely a milestone in the literature of integer programming and combinatorial optimization. It draws from the Interdisciplinarity of these fields [...]. With knowledge about the relevant terms, one can enjoy special subsections without being entirely familiar with the rest of the chapter. This makes it not only an interesting research book but even a dictionary. [...] The longer one works with it, the more beautiful it becomes." Optima 56, 1997.

Measuring productive efficiency for nonprofit organizations has posed a great challenge to applied researchers today. The problem has many facets and diverse implications for a number of disciplines such as economics, applied statistics, management science and information theory. This monograph discusses four major areas, which emphasize the applied economic and econometric as. pects of the production frontier analysis: A. Stochastic frontier theory, B. Data envelopment analysis, C. Clustering and estimation theory, D. Economic and managerial applications Besides containing an up-to-date survey of the mos. t recent developments in the field, the monograph presents several new results and theorems from my own research. These include but are not limited to the following: (1) interface with parametric theory, (2) minimax and robust concepts of production frontier, (3) game-theoretic extension of the Farrell and Johansen models, (4) optimal clustering techniques for data envelopment analysis and (5) the dynamic and stochastic generalizations of the efficiency frontier at the micro and macro levels. In my research work in this field I have received great support and inspiration from Professor Abraham Charnes of the University of Texas at Austin, who has basically founded the technique of data envelopment analysis, developed it and is still expanding it. My interactions with him have been most fruitful and productive. I am deeply grateful to him. Finally, I must record my deep appreciation to my wife and two children for their loving and enduring support. But for their support this work would not have been completed.

Complete with valuable FORTRAN programs that help solve nondifferentiable nonlinear LtandLo.-norm estimation problems, this important reference/text extensively delineates ahistory of Lp-norm estimation. It examines the nonlinear Lp-norm estimation problem that isa viable alternative to least squares estimation problems where the underlying errordistribution is nonnormal, i.e., non-Gaussian.Nonlinear LrNorm Estimation addresses both computational and statistical aspects ofLp-norm estimation problems to bridge the gap between these two fields . . . contains 70useful illustrations ... discusses linear Lp-norm as well as nonlinear Lt, Lo., and Lp-normestimation problems . . . provides all appropriate computational algorithms and FORTRANlistings for nonlinear Lt- and Lo.-norm estimation problems . . . guides readers with clear endof-chapter notes on related topics and outstanding research publications . . . contains numericalexamples plus several practical problems .. . and shows how the data can prescribe variousapplications of Lp-norm alternatives.Nonlinear Lp-Norm Estimation is an indispensable reference for statisticians, operations researchers, numerical analysts, applied mathematicians, biometricians, andcomputer scientists, as well as a text for graduate students in statistics or computer science.

Traditionally, statistics and music are not generally associated with each other. However, ...intelligent... music software, computer digitization, and other advanced techniques and technologies have precipitated the need for standard statistical models to answer basic musicological questions. Statistics In Musicology presents an unprecedented introduction to statistical and mathematical methods developed for use in music analysis, music theory, and performance theory. It explores concrete methods for data generation and numerical encoding of musical data and serves as a practical reference for a wide audience, including statisticians, mathematicians, musicologists, and musicians.
