Star Worlds explores the future-oriented universe of online virtual worlds connected with popular science fiction—specifically, with Star Wars and Star Trek—that have been inhabited for over a decade by computer gamers. The Star Wars and Star Trek franchises, both of which have shaped the dominant science fiction mythologies of the last half-century, offer profound conceptions of the tension between freedom and control in human economic, political, and social interactions. William Sims Bainbridge investigates the human and technological dynamics of four online virtual worlds based on these two very different traditions: the massively multiplayer online games Star Wars Galaxies; Star Wars: The Old Republic; Star Trek Online; and the Star Trek community in the non-game, user-created virtual environment, Second Life. The four “star worlds” explored in this book illustrate the dilemmas concerning the role of technology as liberator or oppressor in our postindustrial society, and represent computer simulations of future possibilities of human experience. Bainbridge considers the relationship between a real person and the role that person plays, the relationship of an individual to society, and the relationship of human beings to computing technology. In addition to collecting ethnographic and quantitative data about the social behavior of other players, he has immersed himself in each of these worlds, role-playing 14 avatars with different skills and goals to gain new insights into the variety of player experience from a personal perspective.

They said it couldn't be done ... all the myriad worlds which have been sought out and explored through more than 500 television episodes and nine Star Trek movies, mapped, illustrated and brought to life in the pages of a comprehensive Star Trek atlas. From the comparatively crowded space of the Alpha and Beta Quadrants, home to Earth and Vulcan, Bajor and Betazed, the Cardassian Union and the Romulan and Klingon Empires; to the distant Gamma Quadrant controlled by the Dominion; to the far reaches of the Delta Quadrant, home space of the Borg, where of Federation explorers only the crew of the USS Voyager has ever been; NEW WORLDS, NEW CIVILIZATIONS catalogues peoples and planets from all four corners of the galaxy. Ever wondered where the blue-skinned Bolians originated from? Or what it is like on the permanently frozen homeworld of the bloodless Breen? From the first world that the first away team landed on under the command of Christopher Pike in the original pilot episode 'The Cage' (a world that has been off-limits to the Federation ever since), to the world of the Ba'ku as seen in 'Star Trek: Insurrection', all these and many more are described and depicted in all their fascinating detail by a team of star-studded contributors. Produced in the finest tradition of bestselling Star Trek illustrated reference from Pocket Books such as The Art of Star Trek and Where No Man Has Gone Before, NEW WORLDS, NEW CIVILIZATIONS will be an essential addition to every Trekker's shelves.

These are the guitars so famous that their names are often household words: B. B. King's Lucille, Eric Clapton's Blackie, Stevie Ray Vaughan's First Wife, Billy F Gibbons' Pearly Gates, Neil Young's Old Black, and many more. Here's the first-ever illustrated history of the actual guitars of the stars that made the music. Other best-selling guitar histories look at the rank-and-file models, but this book is unique in profiling the actual "star guitars"--the million-dollar babies, such as the 1968 Stratocaster that Jimi Hendrix burned at Woodstock, which sold at Sotheby's auction house in 1993 for $1,300,000. Amateurs buy guitars to emulate the stars--Clapton's Strat, Slash's Les Paul--and this book explains the stars' modifications, thus showing how others can recreate those famous tones.
