Excerpt from Springfield in the Spanish-American War In the Spanish-American war of 1898, Springfield rose to the occasion as she did in 1770 and 1861 and sent her youngest and best and bravest sons to the front. It was her sons who fought and fell at El Caney, the one battle of modern times where infantry, practically unsupported by artillery, captured a well fortified town and it was her sons who were in the lead in drawing the attacking lines so tightly about the city of Santiago that its surrender had to follow. It was her sons also who, on the high seas, on a fast auxiliary cruiser, did faithful service as a portion of the navy and had the satisfaction of doing their share in remembering the Maine by sinking a Spanish transport and a gun boat. Her sons fell on the battlefield and died in the camps and hospitals after enduring as soldiers, the hardships and toils of one of the shortest yet most important and bloodiest campaigns in history and of the honors of that war, Springfield claims a goodly share for herself. "During the Gilded Age and the Progressive Era, thousands upon thousands of American men devoted their time and money to the creation of an unsought - and in some quarters unwelcome - revived state militia. In this book, Eleanor L. Hannah studies the social history of the National Guard, focusing on issues of manhood and citizenship as they relate to the rise of the state militias." "The implications of this book are far-reaching, for it offers historians a fresh look at a long-ignored group of men and unites social and cultural history to explore changing notions of manhood and citizenship during years of frenetic change in the American landscape."--BOOK JACKET.

THE LITTLE WAR OF PRIVATE POST is a stirring, funny, brave, sympathetic piece of Americana—the memoir of a foot soldier in the Spanish-American War who happened also to be a first-rate artist, carrying a sketchbook along with his gun. It is a GI’s view of the invasion of Cuba in June 1898, from the moment that Charles Johnson Post passed the jumping test, the coughing test and the eyesight test and became a soldier to the day he returned to New York, gaunt and fever-ridden—the first man back from San Juan Hill. In April, Private Post was among the raw recruits assembled at Camp Black on Hempstead Plains, Long Island. He is eloquent about the soldier’s diet of coffee, hardtack, and sowbelly, “rancid and translucent in decay”; about the practice drills in close order formation, “much as in the days of Waterloo or Gettysburg”; about his fellow soldiers, their clothing, daily life, and esprit de corps. Post has such a good-humored, straight view of his own and others’ experiences that throughout the book all that is dismal, painful, malarial, hot, deathly and serious becomes touching, brave and ludicrous—though never losing dignity. The writer’s pen and the artist’s brush re-create for us the invasion of Cuba, one of the most brilliant campaigns of our entire military history—despite fantastic blunders before, during and after it. Rubber ponchos peeled; woolen uniforms were ridiculous in the Cuban heat; horses were so scarce that the Rough Riders had nothing to ride; and after Santiago had capitulated, General Shafter waited and waited while his troops died of disease, far removed from medical care. THE LITTLE WAR OF PRIVATE POST is the chronicle of individual men on a wide canvas. Many of them died, and death gives to the little routines of their lives an epic significance. This was an “old-fashioned” war, but in it we find much that is illuminating today—particularly so because it is on a small, personal scale.

Imagining Our Americas

Imagining Our Americas

This rich interdisciplinary collection of essays advocates and models a hemispheric approach to the study of the Americas. Taken together, the essays examine North and South America, the Caribbean, and the Pacific as a broad region transcending both national boundaries and the dichotomy between North and South. In the volume’s substantial introduction, the editors, an anthropologist and a historian, explain the need to move beyond the paradigm of U.S. American Studies and Latin American Studies as two distinct fields. They point out the Cold War origins of area studies, and they note how many of the Americas’ most significant social formations have spanned borders if not continents: diverse and complex indigenous societies, European conquest and colonization, African slavery, Enlightenment-based independence movements, mass immigrations, and neoliberal economies. Scholars of literature, ethnic studies, and regional studies as well as of anthropology and history, the contributors focus on the Americas as a broadly conceived geographic, political, and cultural formation. Among the essays are explorations of the varied histories of African Americans’ presence in Mexican and Chicano communities, the different racial and class meanings that the Colombian musical genre cumbia assumes as it is absorbed across national borders, and the contrasting visions of anticolonial struggle embodied in the writings of two literary giants and national heroes: José Martí of Cuba and José Rizal of the Philippines. One contributor shows how a pidgin-language mixture of Japanese, Hawaiian, and English allowed second-generation Japanese immigrants to critique Hawaii’s plantation labor system as well as Japanese hierarchies of gender, generation, and race. Another examines the troubled history of U.S. gay and lesbian solidarity with the Cuban Revolution. Building on and moving beyond previous scholarship, this collection illuminates the productive intellectual and political lines of inquiry opened by a focus on the Americas. Contributors. Excerpt from Recollections of My Service and Experiences in the Spanish-American War: 1898-1899 Cuba had been restless ever since the severance of Mexico and Central and South America from Spain, caused largely by the pernicious laws, corrupt misgovernment, and exploitation of the colony for the benefit of the mother country. As early as 1850 there was acute discontent in the island, and, because of its proximity to the United States, not only our people but the Administration as well voiced their sympathy freely and frequently. The ten years' war, 1868-78, had moral as well as financial support from our citizens; and during the latter portion of the period intervention by our Government seemed probable. Spain, however, by the promise of the abolition of slavery, reforms in government, and colonial autonomy - in addition to general amnesty for those engaged - brought the war to a close. The promise of governmental reforms and real autonomy proved illusive. Reciprocity with the United States, which had been promised, was not put in force until 1891, and was terminated in 1894. The arrangement had been of great benefit to Cuba, and its termination caused discontent and unrest. Soon preparations for another war began.
