Sport can play an important role in the reconstruction of people and places and restoring peace, particularly in a form of soft power in periods of conflicts. The invasion of Ukraine has caused international organizations, national governments, and sports associations to reflect on, and address, an appropriate response; raising issues of diplomacy, sport policy, and law. LawInSport and The Sports Law and Policy Centre have conducted a joint survey with reports on 30 countries and 30 International Sports Federations, assessing the legal implications in sport on in the aftermath of the current Ukraine Russia war. This survey has no political goal; it exclusively aims to help sport stakeholders globally to be better equipped to address these challenges and develop a clear understanding of how sports organisations could or should react to similar situations.

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in early 2022, sanctions were implemented that banned Russia from most international sports. As a result, sport governing bodies (SGBs) have made a marked shift in their tradition of neutrality, to a point of no return. In light of this, this book asks what is next for SGBs. It provides an analysis of the root problem that sport governing bodies have had with politics since their inception: a paradoxical treatment of neutrality.
