"Spiritual Gifts" was, and is, the general title of four of Ellen White's earliest published books. They were originally published as separate volumes with their individual subtitles: SPIRITUAL GIFTS. THE GREAT CONTROVERSY (1858);SPIRITUAL GIFTS. MY CHRISTIAN EXPERIENCE, VIEWS, AND LABORS (1860);SPIRITUAL GIFTS. IMPORTANT FACTS OF FAITH (1864);SPIRITUAL GIFTS. IMPORTANT FACTS OF FAITH: LAWS OF HEALTH AND Testimonies Nos. 1-10. (1864).For many years they have been combined, two volumes each, in two books as "SPIRITUAL GIFTS. VOLS. I-II & VOLS. III-IV. This present printing returns them to their original, separate book format, and presents them in large print; convenient for all ages. This volume I, written in 1858, is the earliest volume by Ellen White carrying the title "The Great Controversy Between Christ and His Angels, and Satan and His Angels." Though smaller in size than later versions, this edition contains numerous statements not found in the more expanded versions- an example: "The Sabbath was instituted in Eden before the fall, and was observed by Adam and Eve, and all the heavenly host. GOD rested on the seventh day, and blessed and hallowed it; and I saw that the Sabbath would never be done away; but the redeemed saints, and all the angelic host, will observe it in honor of the great Creator to all eternity." p 123, 124 (present volume, emphasis added).

This work gives a detailed history and defense of the Advent Movement of the 1840's known as Millerism, the movement from which the Seventh-day Adventist denomination sprang. The book is based on original sources, William Miller's correspondence, contemporaneous books, pamphlets, journals, newspapers. The first half is devoted to the history of the movement, and the second half to an examination of charges made against the Advent believers, such as that they wore ascension robes, that the Millerite preaching filled the asylums, and so forth.

This study presents the first comprehensive analysis of Seventhday Adventist interchurch relations – a 20-million member body whose ecumenical stance has so far been underresearched. For the sake of interpreting denominational involvement and reservations in Adventism as well as beyond, the study develops a new academic approach to ecumenism based on Relational Models Theory, a comprehensive social science paradigm of interpreting human relationships. The resulting typology of ecumenical interactions and the historical case study of Adventism suggest that such a relational interpretation of ecumenical interaction sheds light on many of the unresolved issues in ecumenics – such as divergent concepts of unity, difficulties in recognition processes, and the permanence of denominationalism.

"The Lord has shown me that Satan was once an honored angel in heaven, next to Jesus Christ. His countenance was mild, expressive of happiness like the other angels. His forehead was high and broad, and showed great intelligence. His form was perfect. He had noble, majestic bearing. And I saw that when God said to his Son, Let us make man in our image, Satan was jealous of Jesus. He wished to be consulted concerning the formation of man. He was filled with envy, jealousy and hatred. He wished to be the highest in heaven, next to God, and receive the highest honors. Until this time all heaven was in order, harmony and perfect subjection to the government of God."-Ellen G White

A foundational text in the Seventh Day Adventist church, The Great Controversy is a vision White had of the great battle between Christ and Satan throughout the ages of the early and modern church. Although the book is not held with as high esteem in Protestant circles, it still is able to outline a way of impactful theological thinking.
