Excerpt from Speeches, Lectures and Letters These Speeches and Lectures have been collected into a volume at the earnest and repeated requests of the personal friends and the followers of Mr. Phillips. In committing them to the Publisher, he wrote: - "I send you about one half of my speeches which have been reported during the last ten years. Put them into a volume, if you think it worth while. Four or five of them ('Idols, ' 'The Election, ' 'Mobs and Education, ' 'Disunion, ' 'Progress, ') were delivered in such circumstances as made it proper I should set down beforehand, substantially, what I had to say. The preservation of the rest you owe to phonography; and most of them to the unequalled skill and accuracy, which almost every New England speaker living can attest, of my friend, J. M. W. Yerrinton. The first speech, relating to the murder of Lovejoy, was reported by B. F. Hallett, Esq. As these reports were made for some daily or weekly paper, I had little time for correction. Giving them such verbal revision as the interval allowed, I left the substance and shape unchanged. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Addresses, Speeches, Lectures, and Letters Upon Various Subjects The Addresses, Speeches, Lectures, etc., etc., which appear in this volume have been selected from many others, and are intended to be preserved in this form, for the use of those who, years hence, may be interested in what is substantially a record of my feelings and views upon important subjects in very interesting periods of our national history. The addresses delivered at Fort Wayne, Ind., in 1861 and 1865 can hardly fail, at any time, to be interesting, as the present the prevailing sentiment of the people of the Northern States at the commencement and the close of the civil war. The letters, which were written in London for the New York Tribune, were copied by a great many newspapers, and very widely circulated and favorably commented upon in all parts of the country. They were written and the Cambridge lectures were delivered when financial and economic questions were engaging public attention - questions that have lost none of their interest - the definite solution of which seems to be far in the future. The Currency. Upon the currency question I have spoken at considerable length, because it was, and still is, a question of supreme importance. A sound circulating medium is the life-blood of commercial nations. In speaking of the currency, I could not fail to express my views upon the legal-tender notes. ISBN: 9781330998144

Excerpt from Complete Works, Vol. 1: Comprising Sermons, Letters, Lectures, Speeches, Etc Having heard many persons, admirers of the late Archbishop Hughes, express a wish that his public lectures, letters and speeches might be collected and published in book form, the compiler of this volume has, after some deliberation, undertaken the task, which, he trusts, will prove acceptable to the Catholic community in general. The following pages are the first installment, and will be immediately followed by another volume of about the same size, which will complete the work. The biographical sketch merely touches upon the principal events in His Grace's career, but is the most complete one yet published. The speeches of His Grace on the School Question - a question which first brought him prominently before the New York public - will, no doubt, be read with pleasure as well as profit by thousands who have heard of these great efforts of Dr. Hughes, but who have had no chance heretofore of reading them. His speeches before the Board of Aldermen, as well as his great Three Days' Speech in Carroll Hall on this question, will be found in this volume in full. Other important documents are also given entire. The concluding volume will also contain important writings of Archbishop Hughes, which should be read by every Catholic in the land. Excerpt from Lectures, Verses, Speeches, Reminiscences, &C He said he should like to ask Mr. Challinor to do the public of Leek the favour of collecting together in a volume the Lectures, and he might add the Speeches which he (mr. Challinor) had delivered during a number of years. He, the Chairman felt sure that such Lectures would not only be in them selves interesting, but would also give a fair picture of the mind and thought which had been interesting and suggestive to more than one generation of fellow townsmen. The audience it was reported joined the Chairman in making this request. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from How to Prepare Essays, Lectures, Articles, Books, Speeches and Letters: With Hints on Writing for the Press Many who themselves can easily write excellent Articles or make excellent Speeches, by the light of nature, will utterly fail to teach beginners the art of Writing or Speaking. Indeed, some of the very greatest Essayists have made quite ridiculous attempts to explain how Style' can be acquired, or even what it really is. An illustration from elsewhere may Show the true reason for this failure. A player Of Billiards sees Roberts making one of his large breaks, or a player -of Lawn Tennis sees Doherty make a beautiful stroke from the back of the court; or else perhaps it is Latham who is playing Tennis or Rackets, or it may be some celebrated Cricketer or Rower or Fencer or Boxer. But, whoever it may be, if he does his work well, then that work will look very easy. The admirer now goes home and tries to imitate what he has seen the skilled player do in the next game which he plays he tries to reproduce the stroke, but fails lamentably. Why is this? Probably it is chiefly because he does some part or parts Of the action wrongly. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
