This volume contains papers presented at the BCS-FACS Workshop on Specification and Verification of Concurrent Systems held on 6-8 July 1988, at the University of Stirling, Scotland. Specification and verification techniques are playing an increasingly important role in the design and production of practical concurrent systems. The wider application of these techniques serves to identify difficult problems that require new approaches to their solution and further developments in specification and verification. The Workshop aimed to capture this interplay by providing a forum for the exchange of the experience of academic and industrial experts in the field. Presentations included: surveys, original research, practical experi ence with methods, tools and environments in the following or related areas: Object-oriented, process, data and logic based models and specifi cation methods for concurrent systems Verification of concurrent systems Tools and environments for the analysis of concurrent systems Applications of specification languages to practical concurrent system design and development. Self-concept and coping behaviour are important aspects of development in adolescence. Despite their developmental significance, however, the two areas have rarely been considered in relation to each other. This book is the first in which the two areas are brought together; it suggests that this interaction can open the way to new possibilities for further research and to new implications for applied work with adolescents. Two separate chapters review research carried out in each of the areas. These are followed by a series of more empirically focussed chapters in which issues such as changes in relationship patterns, difficult school situations, leaving school, use of leisure, anxiety and suicidal behaviour are examined in the context of self-concept and coping. The research described in this monograph concerns the formal specification and compositional verification of real-time systems. A real-time programminglanguage is considered in which concurrent processes communicate by synchronous message passing along unidirectional channels. To specifiy functional and timing properties of programs, two formalisms are investigated: one using a real-time version of temporal logic, called Metric Temporal Logic, and another which is basedon extended Hoare triples. Metric Temporal Logic provides a concise notationto express timing properties and to axiomatize the programming language, whereas Hoare-style formulae are especially convenient for the verification of sequential constructs. For both approaches a compositional proof system has been formulated to verify that a program satisfies a specification. To deduce timing properties of programs, first maximal parallelism is assumed, modeling the situation in which each process has itsown processor. Next, this model is generalized to multiprogramming where several processes may share a processor and scheduling is based on priorities. The proof systems are shown to be sound and relatively complete with respect to a denotational semantics of the programming language. The theory is illustrated by an example of a watchdog timer.

This book is about the verification of reactive systems. A reactive system is a system that maintains an ongoing interaction with its environment, as opposed to computing some final value on termination. The family of reactive systems includes many classes of programs whose correct and reliable construction is con sidered to be particularly challenging, including concurrent programs, embedded and process control programs, and operating systems. Typical examples of such systems are an air traffic control system, programs controlling mechanical devices such as a train, or perpetually ongoing processes such as a nuclear reactor. With the expanding use of computers in safety-critical areas, where failure is potentially disastrous, correctness is crucial. This has led to the introduction of formal verification techniques, which give both users and designers of software and hardware systems greater confidence that the systems they build meet the desired specifications. Framework The approach promoted in this book is based on the use of temporal logic for specifying properties of reactive systems, and develops an extensive verification methodology for proving that a system meets its temporal specification. Reactive programs must be specified in terms of their ongoing behavior, and temporal logic provides an expressive and natural language for specifying this behavior. Our framework for specifying and verifying temporal properties of reactive systems is based on the following four components: 1. A computational model to describe the behavior of reactive systems. The model adopted in this book is that of a Fair Transition System (FTS).

Coloured Petri Nets (CPN) is a graphical language for modelling and validating concurrent and distributed systems, and other systems in which concurrency plays a major role.
