Building your own box hull models is often ridiculed as too easy. Conversely, beginners in ship model building easily overestimate certain construction tasks. Yet, for example, an attractive push boat can be built with simple means. Günther Slansky, who has been building model ships for over 60 years, describes in this book how to achieve three coordinated models that can be used together or separately without requiring a great deal of tools or materials. Step by step, on the basis of construction plans, a river push boat of the Elbe navigation, a construction pontoon of the waterway construction and a functional crane ship are created. The author not only shows in detail how to build a stable wooden hull, but also addresses the many details that go into ships and their interiors. He deals in detail with questions about the ship's electrical system. The basic structure of electrical circuits is described as well as the function of important electronic and electromechanical components. The text is supplemented by 30 sketches and about 170 color photos.

Very Special Ships is the first full-length book about the six Abdiel-class fast minelayers, the fastest and most versatile ships to serve in the Royal Navy in the Second World War. They operated not only as offensive minelayers dashing into enemy waters under cover of darkness but in many other roles, most famously as blockade runners to Malta. In lieu of mines, they transported items as diverse as ammunition, condensed milk, gold, and VIPs. Distinguished by their three funnels, the Abdiels were attractive, well-designed ships, and they were also unique no other navy had such ships, and so they were sought-after commands and blessed with fine captains. To give the fullest picture of this important class of ships, the book details the origins and history of mines, minelayers, and minelaying; covers the origins and design of the class; describes the construction of each of the six ships, and the modified design of the last two; tells in detail of the operational careers of the ships in the second World War, when they played vital roles in the battle of Crete and the siege of Malta, plied the hazardous route to Tobruk, and laid mines off the Italian coast. The post-war careers of the surviving ships is also documented. Written to appeal to naval enthusiasts, students of World War II and modelmakers, the author tells the story of these ships through first-hand accounts, official sources, and specially- commissioned drawings and photographs.

Very Special Ships is the first full-length book about the Abdiel-class fast minelayers, which were considered the fastest and most versatile to serve in the Royal Navy during World War II. This book spans the scope of the class from alpha to zulu as they operated in many roles, most famously as blockade runners to Malta, transporting items as diverse as ammunition, condensed milk, gold, and VIPs. To provide a complete picture of this important class of ships, Very Special Ships examines the origin and history of the minelayers, describes the design and construction of each ship in the class, details the operational history of the ships during World War II, and concludes with the post-war careers of the surviving ships.

When we decided to launch the Modelling Full Ahead project, we were aware that in an eighty page publication it was possible to condense the information needed to build a specific warship. But as modelling is evolving nowadays with it’s curiosity, techniques, innovation, history, and certainly everything that pushes us to build a scale model, this cannot only be achieved with a monographic series. Baring this is mind and in response to the multitude of suggestions we received, we offer you a parallel to the monographs series. In this special issue we will deal with difficulties that may occur to you during the building stages, such as working with photo-etch, advanced painting, scratch-building, diorama composition, etc. With this new guide we will not only help you to build your models but also have the possibility to tell its history.

Model ships from kits are an excellent introduction to this fascinating hobby. But at some point, the attraction of building a unique model based on a construction plan almost always wins out. In this book, Günther Slansky describes general building techniques and solutions for recurring components, equipment, assemblies, and special equipment, such as winches, soldered assemblies, funnels, hatches, skylights, masts, driving positions and guns. An indispensable guide for model ship builders and model ship enthusiasts, but also a textbook for those readers wishing to enter the hobby. From the content: • Basics of model ship building • Workshop, tools, machines • Building process, preliminary work, construction method and building method • The propulsion and rudder system • Prefabricated hull or self-built • Box hull, articulated hull, round hull, and round frame planking • General superstructures and equipment • The advantages of the assembly method • The house construction • Special equipment and details on deck • Soldered parts and assemblies • Interior fittings and design of the open decks • Ship's weapons: Light, medium, and heavy artillery

Now that '3-D models’ are so often digital displays on flat screens, it is timely to look back at the solid models that were once the third dimension of science. This book is about wooden ships and plastic molecules, wax bodies and a perspex economy, monuments in cork and mathematics in plaster, casts of diseases, habitat dioramas, and extinct monsters rebuilt in bricks and mortar. These remarkable artefacts were fixtures of laboratories and lecture halls, studios and workshops, dockyards and museums. Considering such objects together for the first time, this interdisciplinary volume demonstrates how, in research as well as in teaching, 3-D models played major roles in making knowledge. Accessible and original chapters by leading scholars highlight the special properties of models, explore the interplay between representation in two dimensions and three, and investigate the shift to modelling with computers. The book is fascinating reading for anyone interested in the sciences, medicine, and technology, and in collections and museums.
