This volume documents the proceedings of the Second International Symposium on Adhesive Joints: Formation, Characteristics and Testing held in Newark, NJ, May 22-24, 2000. Since the first symposium, held in 1982, there had been tremendous research activity dealing with many aspects of adhesive joints. This volume contains a total of 21 papers, which were all properly peer reviewed, revised and edited before inclusion. Therefore, this book is not merely a collection of unreviewed manuscripts, but rather represents information which has passed peer scrutiny. Furthermore, the authors were asked to update their manuscripts, so the information contained in this book should be current and fresh. The book is divided into three parts: 1) General Papers; 2) Evaluation, Analysis and Testing; and 3) Durability Aspects. The topics covered include: molecular brush concepts in enhancing strength of adhesive joints; factors affecting performance of adhesive joints; substrate preparation and modification; interfacial/interphasial aspects; determination of locus of failure; analysis and evaluation of adhesive joints using various techniques; testing of adhesive joints; stress analysis; application of fracture mechanics; durability aspects; accelerated environmental degradation of adhesive joints; solvent uptake; and adhesives with special characteristics. This volume represents a commentary on the current R&D activity in this arena and it should be of great value and interest to anyone interested in adhesive bonding / adhesive joints. Furthermore, this volume contains a number of excellent review/overview articles, which should be of particular value.

This important collection reviews key research on adhesive behaviour and applications in sectors as diverse as construction and automotive engineering. The book is divided into three main parts: fundamentals, mechanical properties and applications. Part one focuses on the basic properties of adhesives, surface assessment and treatment. Part two concentrates on understanding how adhesives perform under stress and the factors affecting fatigue and failure. The final part of the book reviews industry specific applications in areas such as building and construction, transport and electrical engineering. With its distinguished editor and international team of contributors, Adhesive bonding is a standard reference for all those concerned with the industrial application of adhesives. - Essential information for all those concerned with the industrial application of adhesives - This important collection examines adhesives and adhesive bonding for load-bearing applications - Arranged in a user-friendly format with three main sections: fundamentals, generic uses and industry specific applications

Adhesives in general and structural adhesives in particular are the subjects of much academic interest as well as commercial importance. Structural bonding, as a method of joining, offers a number of advantages over mechanical fastening. However, in order to achieve satisfactory results, the proper adhesive must be selected and the appropriate bonding procedures followed. The purpose of Structural Adhesives: Chemistry and Technology is to review the major classes of structural adhesives and the principles of adhesion and bonding as these relate to structural joints. Each chapter provides an overview of the topic under discussion with a list of references to the relevant literature. In addition to describing the chemistry involved, other aspects of structural adhesive technology are covered, such as formula tion, testing, and end uses. Some structural adhesives, especially epoxies and phenolics, have a long history of successful use and are now widely employed. Others, such as the structural acrylics and cyanoacrylates, are beginning to gain industrial acceptance. Urethanes and anaerobics have limited but important uses, while high-temperature adhesives are still largely in the research and development stage.
