This book is intended for researchers and students concerned with questions in analysis and function theory. The author provides an exposition of the main results obtained in recent years by Soviet and other mathematicians in the theory of mappings with bounded distortion, an active direction in contemporary mathematics. The mathematical tools presented can be applied to a broad spectrum of problems that go beyond the context of the main topic of investigation. For a number of questions in the theory of partial differential equations and the theory of functions with generalized derivatives, this is the first time they have appeared in an internationally distributed monograph.

This volume is a collection of surveys on function theory in euclidean n-dimensional spaces centered around the theme of quasiconformal space mappings. These surveys cover or are related to several topics including inequalities for conformal invariants and extremal length, distortion theorems, L(p)-theory of quasiconformal maps, nonlinear potential theory, variational calculus, value distribution theory of quasiregular maps, topological properties of discrete open mappings, the action of quasiconformal maps in special classes of domains, and global injectivity theorems. The present volume is the first collection of surveys on Quasiconformal Space Mappings since the origin of the theory in 1960 and this collection provides in compact form access to a wide spectrum of recent results due to well-known specialists. Geometric Function Theory is that part of Complex Analysis which covers the theory of conformal and quasiconformal mappings. Beginning with the classical Riemann mapping theorem, there is a lot of existence theorems for canonical conformal mappings. On the other side there is an extensive theory of qualitative properties of conformal and quasiconformal mappings, concerning mainly a prior estimates, so called distortion theorems (including the Bieberbach conjecture with the proof of the Branges). Here a starting point was the classical Scharz lemma, and then Koebe's distortion theorem. There are several connections to mathematical physics, because of the relations to potential theory (in the plane). The Handbook of Geometric Function Theory contains also an article about constructive methods and further a Bibliography including applications eg: to electroxtatic problems, heat conduction, potential flows (in the plane). · A collection of independent survey articles in the field of GeometricFunction Theory · Existence theorems and qualitative properties of conformal and quasiconformal mappings · A bibliography, including many hints to applications in electrostatics, heat conduction, potential flows (in the plane).

This is one of the first monographs to deal with the metric theory of spatial mappings and incorporates results in the theory of quasi-conformal, quasi-isometric and other mappings. The main subject is the study of the stability problem in Liouville's theorem on conformal mappings in space, which is representative of a number of problems on stability for transformation classes. To enable this investigation a wide range of mathematical tools has been developed which incorporate the calculus of variation, estimates for differential operators like Korn inequalities, properties of functions with bounded mean oscillation, etc. Results obtained by others researching similar topics are mentioned, and a survey is given of publications treating relevant questions or involving the technique proposed. This volume will be of great value to graduate students and researchers interested in geometric function theory.

In honor of Frederick W. Gehring on the occasion of his 70th birthday, an international conference on ""Quasiconformal mappings and analysis"" was held in Ann Arbor in August 1995. The 9 main speakers of the conference (Astala, Earle, Jones, Kra, Lehto, Martin, Pommerenke, Sullivan, and Vaisala) provide broad expository articles on various aspects of quasiconformal mappings and their relations to other areas of analysis. 12 other distinguished mathematicians contribute articles to this volume.

This book explores the most recent developments in the theory of planar quasiconformal mappings with a particular focus on the interactions with partial differential equations and nonlinear analysis. It gives a thorough and modern approach to the classical theory and presents important and compelling applications across a spectrum of mathematics: dynamical systems, singular integral operators, inverse problems, the geometry of mappings, and the calculus of variations. It also gives an account of recent advances in harmonic analysis and their applications in the geometric theory of mappings. The book explains that the existence, regularity, and singular set structures for second-order divergence-type equations--the most important class of PDEs in applications--are determined by the mathematics underpinning the geometry, structure, and dimension of fractal sets; moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces; and conformal dynamical systems. These topics are inextricably linked by the theory of quasiconformal mappings. Further, the interplay between them allows the authors to extend classical results to more general settings for wider applicability, providing new and often optimal answers to questions of existence, regularity, and geometric properties of solutions to nonlinear systems in both elliptic and degenerate elliptic settings.

This ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF MA THEMA TICS aims to be a reference work for all parts of mathe matics. It is a translation with updates and editorial comments of the Soviet Mathematical Encyclopaedia published by 'Soviet Encyclopaedia Publishing House' in five volumes in 1977-1985. The annotated translation consists of ten volumes including a special index volume. There are three kinds of articles in this ENCYCLOPAEDIA. First of all there are survey-type articles dealing with the various main directions in mathematics (where a rather fine subdivi sion has been used). The main requirement for these articles has been that they should give a reasonably complete up-to-date account of the current state of affairs in these areas and that they should be maximally accessible. On the whole, these articles should be understandable to mathematics students in their first specialization years, to graduates from other mathematical areas and, depending on the specific subject, to specialists in other domains of science, en gineers and teachers of mathematics. These articles treat their material at a fairly general level and aim to give an idea of the kind of problems, techniques and concepts involved in the area in question. They also contain background and motivation rather than precise statements of precise theorems with detailed definitions and technical details on how to carry out proofs and constructions. The second kind of article, of medium length, contains more detailed concrete problems, results and techniques.

This volume is a collection of papers reflecting the conference held in Nahariya, Israel in honor of Professor Lawrence Zalcman's sixtieth birthday. The papers, many written by leading authorities, range widely over classical complex analysis of one and several variables, differential equations, and integral geometry. Topics covered include, but are not limited to, these areas within the theory of functions of one complex variable: complex dynamics, elliptic functions, Kleinian groups, quasiconformal mappings, Tauberian theorems, univalent functions, and value distribution theory. Altogether, the papers in this volume provide a comprehensive overview of activity in complex analysis at the beginning of the twenty-first century and testify to the continuing vitality of the interplay between classical and modern analysis. It is suitable for graduate students and researchers interested in computer analysis and differential geometry. Information for our distributors: This book is co-published with Bar-Ilan University.
