In an effort to determine the wartime missions of the Soviet Navy and its ability to fight at various levels of conflict, the author compares the doctrinal writings of Admiral Sergei Gorshkov with the naval construction programs that have taken place during his twenty-three years as Commander-in-Chief. The author concludes that Gorshkov has successfully accomplished his strategic attack mission by building a ballistic missile submarine force that will be protected in wartime by naval aviation and a surface and subsurface covering fleet. At the same time, Gorshkov has continued to attempt to solve the increasingly difficult problem of strategic defense through extensive research in strategic antisubmarine warfare. While a fixed percentage of the total military budget has affected the construction of ships that would complement other forms of naval warfare, Gorshkov has also achieved a substantial ability to fight at sea during non-strategic conflicts. Specifically structured around research questions and avenues for further study, and providing the historical context to enable this further research, Modern Naval History is a key historiographical guide for students wishing to gain a deeper understanding of naval history and its contemporary relevance. Navies play an important role in the modern world, and the globalisation of economies, cultures and societies has placed a premium on maritime communications. Modern Naval History demonstrates the importance of naval history today, showing its relevance to a number of disciplines and its role in understanding how navies relate to their host societies. Richard Harding explains why naval history is still important, despite slipping from the attention of policy makers and the public since 1945, and how it can illuminate answers to questions relating to economic, diplomatic, political, social and cultural history. The book explores how naval history has informed these fields and how it can produce a richer and more informed historical understanding of navies and sea power.

From the steam-powered models introduced in World War I to today's nuclear-powered, multiweaponed technological wonders, submarines have revolutionized warfare on the world's seas. This volume follows the extraordinary development of this key component of the world's navies. Submarines: An Illustrated History of Their Impact reveals how underwater warships evolved to become major threats to battle fleets and merchant shipping, as well as primary platforms for deterrent forces and crucial symbols of military power. In a series of chronological chapters, Submarines describes key developments in diving ability, underwater endurance, and weapons capabilities in specific periods, while highlighting strategic and operational innovations; the role of technological research; famous submarine events, battles, and commanders; and the impact of submarine services on naval society. The book also includes an illustrated reference section covering every submarine class worldwide since 1900. This coverage plus additional reference features make Submarines an essential introduction to a weapons system that has long held the public's imagination.
