The series subjects are themed to include an interesting mixture of useful historic illustrations, depicting locomotives, rolling stock and infrastructure.Southern Railway Gallery covers the history of the Southern Railway from its beginings in 1923, to nationalisation in 1948, covering most aspects of its fascinating history and operations. The book looks at aspects of the Southern from the early years in the early 1920s, when the company had old worn-out stock on many of its lines, through to the introduction of new modern rolling stock and the electrification of much of its network in Kent, Sussex, Surrey and parts of Hampshire.The company operated an extensive rail and bus network on the Isle of Wight, which covered the whole island and is well remembered to this day.Although the Southern introduced a number of modern new steam classes, its main goal was to electrify as much of the network as possible, however this did not preclude the company from introducing two classes of successful Pacific type locomotives in the 1940s.The company owned and operated docks and harbours throughout its existence, having an extensive fleet of ferries and cargo vessels, some of which served with the Royal Navy in the Second World War as hospital ships. The Southern, also operated bus and road services, which covered many areas not served by a local railway station on the system.The Southern Railway ceased to exist at midnight on 31 December 1947, after a remarkable existence of twenty-four years.

Southern Railway's Spencer Shops was a vibrant part of the Southeast's transportation network for more than 80 years. Starting in the late 1800s and continuing until its closure in 1979, the shop complex and its accompanying yards, transfer sheds, and stockyards constituted a major force in the economy of North Carolina and Southern states. The trains that the shop prepared were hauling everyday freight--Appalachian lumber, Piedmont textiles, and perishables--or were famous passenger trains like the Crescent, the Peach Queen, and many more. Others were more notable, such as the locomotive in the folk ballad "The Wreck of the Old 97" or President Roosevelt's funeral train in 1945. The Spencer Shops was an industrial power whose prominence today is celebrated in its continued role as the home to the North Carolina Transportation Museum. This book tells the story of how Spencer Shops came to be, its role in transportation, and its continued use today as a North Carolina Historic Site.

They have come about because of how these peoples personal lives dont stop when they come to work, and work doesnt finish when they clock out either.Sasha Maslov captured these signalwomen in the tradition of modern documentary photography, photographing each of his subjects in her everyday work environment, as if in the middle of her own small world. The clear and naive gaze of the lens on the subject of the portrait, alongside the subjects own gaze on her future beholder, establishes a remote visual communication, trust, and mutual sympathy between the future observer and the photo series real-life subjects. For every place and worker in the series there is only one standalone portrait, which has a comprehensive set of visual and ideological characteristics. However, the sheer number of photographs in the series shows just how varied and multifaceted this phenomenon can be, aesthetically and otherwise.
