Excerpt from Southern Letters The letters appear substantially as published in the champion, and the critical may object that the collection savors more of the haste of the newspaper writer than the care of the book-maker; but, such as they are, the letters are submitted to the patient indulgence of the readers of Kansas, which has never failed the writer in lo! These many years. N. L. P. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Letters From the South, Vol. 1 of 2 IN order to lay a solid foundation for my travels, I ought first to tell how this new world was made and, secondly, how it was peopled; since, if it had never been made or peopled, it would not be worth Writing about. There are two ways of making a world, lately invented by the geologists - one by fire, the other by water. I mention these to show you it is no difficult matter; and you may take your choice of either, as people choose whether they will have their mutton roasted or boiled. Excerpt from The Widow in the South, a Series of Letters ON account of the widespread agitation following the appointment of Dr. Crum as Collector of the Port of Charleston, I, early this year, made an extended trip through the. South, at the request of my editor-ih-chief. In sending me to look up so delicate a mat ter as the race problem from the Southern standpoint, my only instruction was to write entirely without personal prejudice the real sentiment of the Southern people - if I could get at it. I was enabled, through being hos pitably entertained by representative old families, to make deductions as to the true situation, founded on indubitable and con vincing facts. That the crossed wires of politics alone stand responsible for the ques tions which bring the negro into a promi nence where he must necessarily show failure, sad though it be, is nevertheless the case. Thus forced to leap over the space of his own unfitness, his progress is backward rather than forward. But for this he might now, after forty years of freedom, be showing a solid foundation for his true positionma re sult which could easily have been attained had he been left to the kindness and guidance of those who understood best his capabilities and slow mental growth. Excerpt from The Old South and the New: A Series of Letters This volume is the result of an earnest desire on the part of its author to understand the industrial and social condition of the people of the Southern States. The better to gratify this desire, he revisited in 1887 substantially the field he had traversed in 1867. A few days sufficed to convince him that to chronicle his observations with photographic fidelity, and to report them, with his conclusions therefrom, to his countrymen at large, might prove to be a fitting close to the labors of a long life which has been devoted chiefly to the investigation of social and politico-economic questions. Excerpt from A Voice From the South: Comprising Letters From Georgia to Massachusetts, and to the Southern States, With an Appendix Containing an Article From the Charleston Mercury on the Wilmot Proviso In order to a proper appreciation of these letters, the reader must remember that the Author speaks throughout, in the character of a Sovereign State, which had long been abused by the Abolitionists, and which had 'received some personal aggressions from Massachusetts, in regard to her Slave property and other things; as indeed had Virginia, South Carolina, and Louisiana. Massachusetts may well be considered the mother of Abolitionism; indeed _her State Abolition Society lays claim to this honor for her; and no one will dispute it with her. She has been the most restless agitator upon this subject by far, of any State in the Union. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Library of Southern Literature, Vol. 2: Compiled Under the Direct Supervision of Southern Men of Letters; Boyle-Clarke The great hell was sounding the dinner hour, for it was twelve o'clock, and the long line of negroes threw aside the gunny-sacks as they came from the field and wiped their per Spiring faces, for it was yet warm, even though October had already touched the trees upon the hill. Excerpt from Letters From the South, Vol. 1 of 2: Written During an Excursion in the Summer of 1816 Friezlanders; an eleventh, from the Celts; a twelfth, from the Egyptians; a thirteenth, from the Phoenicians; a fifteenth - I beg pardon - a fourteenth, from the Chinese; -a fifteenth, from the Norwegians; a sixteenth, from the Ethiopians; and a seventeenth, from the Anthropophagi! Here is an ancestor for every state in the union, which is enough, in all conscience, to content a reasonable man. But there are at least twenty more papas putting in for little America, which shows how anxious every body was to claim this noble offspring. Each of these supported 'his theory with a pertinacity proportioned to its enor mity; and, perhaps, there never was such a mass of absurdity as has been generated by this sub ject, useless in itself, and now beyond the reach of human research to determine. It was to be hoped that the subject had been laid at rest in the learned lumber of the times, never to be revived. But a philosopher of our own country, whose name may be found in all the newspapers, has lately revived it; and did, what was thought - utterly impossible - produced new ab surdities. The flat-nosed Tartars, and Samoiedes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Letter to a Whig Member of the Southern Independence Association The course taken by the Government has unfortunately been such as to give the attempts of your Southern friends and their allies to embroil us with the Federals a very fair chance of success. They have declined to take their stand on the firm ground of international duty, which plainly for bids us, as professed neutrals, to allow either belligerent to make our shores the base of his maritime Operations, and have taken their stand instead on the ground of municipal law, which is wholly irrelevant as between nations, while, at the same time, they have shrunk from amending the muni cipal law in the manner required in order to render it equal to the present need. The consequence is, apparently, that only the law's delay (a most humiliating protection) is now interposed between us and a calamity which even those who are doing their best to bring it on us, would almost fear to name.
