A riveting and emotional portrait of abusive conditions in rural Zimbabwe during the 1920s, this novel follows the terrible misfortunes of a brave and likable young girl as she grows to womanhood. Chinongwa always has been told that her paternal grandfather was shot and beheaded in front of her father's eyes, but she can't be sure whether this story is real because it is so intertwined in her mind with fantastical tales of talking snakes and men buried alive with mice tied to their backs. At age nine, however, her own life becomes nightmare when, in exchange for food, she is given to a man older than her father, and at age 11 she has her first baby. Throughout her ordeal, Chinongwa is sustained by the natural beauty of the countryside and her hopes that better times lie ahead, but the story sadly foreshadows the plight of present-day Zimbabwe.

Given the pervasive threat of ethnic conflict and the growing incidence of internal wars spilling across borders, understanding the impact of third-party intervention on conflict prevention, durable peaceful governance, and amicable social relations becomes critical exercises for any scholar of conflict management. The purpose of this project is to determine whether intervention strategies undertaken by international, regional, and subregional actors can be devised or improved so as to maximize the likelihood of successful conflict management in the case of internal conflicts, particularly ethnic conflicts. As the literature and empirical evidence suggest, third-party intervention does not always prevent or end violence. Jennifer L. De Maio contends that external involvement is more likely to lead to effective conflict management if it works to alter the perceptions of the antagonists and ensures that the parties truly own the peace. This assessment report is a component of the multiple-scale southern African sub-global assessment (SAfMA), which investigated the condition and trends of ecosystem services and human well-being in the Gariep basin from 1993 to 2003, as well as future scenarios and possible responses to ecosystem change. The assessment features highlights from four local-scale assessments nested within the basin: Sehlabathebe, Great Fish River, Richtersveld and the Gauteng Province.
