“As finely worked as a Swiss watch and as funny as the human condition permits ... the zigzag brilliance of the text as the clunky lines of the farce-within-a-farce rub against the sharp dialogue of reality.” The Guardian A play-within-a-play following a touring theatre company who are rehearsing and performing a comedy called Nothing On, results in a riotous double-bill of comedic craft and dramatic skill. Hurtling along at breakneck speed it shows the backstage antics as they stumble through the dress-rehearsal at Weston-super-Mare, then on to a disastrous matinee at Ashton-under-Lyne, followed by a total meltdown in Stockton-on-Tees. Michael Frayn's irresistible, multi-award-winning backstage farce has been enjoyed by millions of people worldwide since it premiered in 1982 and has been hailed as one of the greatest British comedies ever written. Winner of both Olivier and Evening Standard Awards for Best Comedy. This edition features a new introduction by Michael Blakemore.

Soundoff is a book about present day political corruption in Washington, D.C. and how Barach Obama, a socialist, is attempting to turn this country into a socialist nation. The people of this country, like the Jews during the holocaust, are being blinded by a charismatic Obama, as Germany was blinded by Hitler. He wants to set up child care for you. He wants to teach your young children. He wants your children to sing praises to him in the schools. He wants the citizens to snitch on each other and has set up websites so this can be done. He wants to set up a national police force answerable to him, separate from the military through the U. S. Marshall Service. He wants to take over the internet. America cannot survive another four years of Barach Obama under a democratic government. He already said our Constitution was in his way of his getting things done. He is already doing everything by Executive Fiat.

Stephen Bett's 12th book, Sound Off: a book of jazz, is loosely, a "serial" poem, a book of 76 linked poems, each responding (himself as a jazz fan) to the work of 76 very current jazz musicians. These "jazzers", as he calls them, are not the old tried & true names we all know--they fall, very roughly, into three general camps: the "sons of Miles" (Jarrett, Hancock, Corea, McLaughlin, Scofield, Shorter, etc.); the ECM artists (largely Norwegian, the very contemporary sound coming from jazz's second centre these days) & very young (20-something), hip, interesting, & mostly NYC-based musicians. Whether readers have heard of names like Bill Frisell or Ketil Bjrnstad will not matter. This is a book of poems celebrating music (almost all the poems are laudatory; a small few are askancely critical) But essentially they are poems for readers--no jazz expertise required. Like Bett's most recent work, the poems tend toward the "minimalist"-- which also works with the musical subject. Structurally, the poems work in a sequence, with language, images, ideas, echoing throughout the book. The arrangement is simple, the names of the musicians alphabetized to set eliminate ranking or preference. Bett has said that all his writing life been trying to reach toward Zukofsky's ideal language for poetry as "upper register music: song"-- his last 3 or 4 books were getting closer and Sound Off just might be the closest yet.

"A fun read that'll have you replaying the songs in your mind and on your stereo." -Chicago Tribune Have you ever listened to a new song and felt as if you'd heard it before? It's not your imagination. Melodies are "borrowed," consciously or subconsciously, more than you might think. For instance, do you know: That U2's "Beautiful Day" shares part of its tune with an a-ha hit from the eighties? Why Huey Lewis was so upset when he first heard Ray Parker Jr.'s "Ghostbusters"? How John Lennon's classic "Imagine" bears an uncanny resemblance to a novelty record cut by his dad? Sounds Like Teen Spirit tells the fascinating true stories behind these and many other "sound-alike" songs. Showcasing well-known artists from the Beatles to Kraftwerk, the Staple Singers to U2, it's a virtual catalog of pop music's "secret history" for casual and hardcore rock-and-roll fans alike. With this entertaining and informative guide, you'll be surprised by the tremendously varied musical influences on your favorite songwriters and performers, and you'll develop a genuine appreciation for what it takes to create a melody that is comfortable and pleasing and yet fresh and original. Best of all, you're sure to discover some great artists and songs and hear familiar music in a fresh, new way!
