Soul Covers is an engaging look at how three very different rhythm and blues performers—Aretha Franklin, Al Green, and Phoebe Snow—used cover songs to negotiate questions of artistic, racial, and personal authenticity. Through close readings of song lyrics and the performers’ statements about their lives and work, the literary critic Michael Awkward traces how Franklin, Green, and Snow crafted their own musical identities partly by taking up songs associated with artists such as Dinah Washington, Hank Williams, Willie Nelson, George Gershwin, Billie Holiday, and the Supremes. Awkward sees Franklin’s early album Unforgettable: A Tribute to Dinah Washington, released shortly after Washington’s death in 1964, as an attempt by a struggling young singer to replace her idol as the acknowledged queen of the black female vocal tradition. He contends that Green’s album Call Me (1973) reveals the performer’s attempt to achieve formal coherence by uniting seemingly irreconcilable aspects of his personal history, including his career in popular music and his religious yearnings, as well as his sense of himself as both a cosmopolitan black artist and a forlorn country boy. Turning to Snow’s album Second Childhood (1976), Awkward suggests that through covers of blues and soul songs, Snow, a white Jewish woman from New York, explored what it means for non-black enthusiasts to perform works considered by many to be black cultural productions. The only book-length examination of the role of remakes in American popular music, Soul Covers is itself a refreshing new take on the lives and work of three established soul artists.

Introducing SOUL CANVAS: MIdnight Edition Dark Theme Coloring Book, featuring beautiful mandalas & inspirational quotes similar to the original SOUL CANVAS coloring book, but with an inverted color scheme, like the dark mode on your phone! Yes, this version of SOUL CANVAS contains white images against a dark background! But wait- "Why would you make dark coloring pages? " You might ask. Here are a few reasons: - Colors will pop & designs stand out more against a dark background - Looks amazing with bright, sparkly, glittery, metallic, neon & opaque pigments such as gel pens, milky pens and markers - Similar to using the "dark theme" or "night mode" setting on your phone or computer screen, many people find a dark background to be easier on the eyes and more soothing to look at than a bright white space for extended periods of time, especially those who are sensitive to light or prone to migraines - A background that is already filled with black color means fewer large areas of empty space to color in, for those who find this part of coloring to be tedious - Something exciting and different to switch up your usual coloring routine & keep things fresh and interesting - Beautiful unique results that are unlike anything you can create w ith traditional coloring pages! Finished products make a standout special addition to your collection, stunning piece of wall art or DIY decor for your home, or a thoughful gift for your friends or family! So, try something new with our exclusive Dark Theme coloring book for all age! From the heartland of Islam arise poems of fiery love and peace, composed by a modern-day female poet descended from a long line of Meccan (from Mecca) scholars. Reflecting the pulsing, indivisible bridge of the works of great Sufi mystics and poets to modern times, these spiritual pieces recall the beloved works of Rabi'ah Al 'Adawiyyah, Rumi and Hafiz. From the land of Arabia where Sufism has been long cloaked in mystery, despite its early roots stemming in the very City of the Prophet, this volume serves to transcend time through filling the existing gap between the early beginnings and the little-known Sufi traditions of current-day puritanical Arabia. These poems also highlight the global and local Sufi spirit enlivening the younger generation. The shedding of the ego, humility and the quest for spiritual heights are glimpsed in this rare volume of verse. Drawing on a rich religious legacy and led by the Sufi tradition seeking Unity, the poems cover aspects related to spirituality and present-day challenges. The inspiring combination of the traditional and modern in these compositions will touch the inner souls and captivate the hearts of those interested in Higher Love in these turbulent times of transition and frantic search for peace.

The makings of this book have been in the works for over a decade. It tells of feelings not yet even experienced by the writer for some years to come. Time and time again she was told of her somewhat mature subject matter, and eventually was able to write about life's range of emotions first hand. The publication of this book was to speak for the voices unheard in our society, who have had to deal with the same issues and emotions time and time again. "I'll be that voice for the masses.". said Anita.
