Foreword Among the many tributes paid to Dr. Simpson at the Memorial Service was the statement that his hymns would be sung, when his books were forgotten. Since his home-going on October twenty-ninth, many of his friends have requested that his poetical writings be collected and published. The committee having in preparation his memoirs found a large number of manuscripts, some of which were in the uncorrected form in which they flowed from the author''s heart. Mrs. Simpson and her family have put all of them at our disposal. Selections have been made from these new hymns which, together with some of the gems which have become familiar through the columns of his periodical, "The Alliance Weekly," and in the hymnology of our generation, are now given to a wider circle. There remain enough poems for a second volume which we hope will soon be issued. Though literary critics have recognized the poetic genius which is so clearly seen even in Dr. Simpson''s prose, he himself disclaimed any natural gift of song. In a letter, written shortly before he ceased his activities, he stated that he never had written a poem in his life until the Spirit of God filled him with "psalms and hymns and spiritual songs." They came to him on all sorts of occasions on land and sea. Some of the following poems were written in Jerusalem, others on the Red Sea, and still others in the Far East during his first missionary journey; while the fitting conclusion to this volume is "Safe Home," written as he neared harbor after girdling the South American continent. Many of his finest hymns were produced under the inspiration of the preparation of his great sermons, and were sung to his own music from manuscript on Sunday mornings in the Gospel Tabernacle, New York City. For years he rarely failed to send his friends a Christmas greeting or New Year message in song; nor did Commencement Day pass at his beloved school, the Missionary Institute, Nyack, without a new Class Song. What do you want out of life? What are you pursuing? Happiness? Money? Fame? Fortune? Pleasure? Security? The ultimate prize is none of these but is actually something much higher and better: Christlikeness. It sounds formidable, but ask yourself one question: Don't you want to be like Christ? If you answered YES! then this book is for you! Have you ever asked yourself, "How can I be more like Jesus? How can I stop sinning? How can I live consistently in a way that pleases God?" Have you ever wondered what the scripture means, "Without holiness no man will see the Lord"? Does it distress you that many believers seem to disregard holiness because they think that they are not "under the law"? Have you ever thought about what it means to be "under the law" and "under grace"? Are you concerned that our nation has cast God aside and is pursuing a secularist agenda? How can that be reversed? Like Christ By Grace: Pursuing the Prize of Christlikeness By God's Grace will give you the answers you seek. Jesus Christ supplies everything you need to be like Him. The book you hold in your hands is a message of encouragement and hope, as well as a challenging call to Christlikeness. No matter how many times you have fallen and no matter how miserably you may have failed, God is on your side. God is for you. He's not about to give up on you. You can be like Christ by grace!

The Wesleyan Holiness Movement

The Wesleyan Holiness Movement
Author: Charles Edwin Jones

Total Pages: 1032
Release: 2005
Genre: Holiness churches
ISBN:

The Wesleyan Holiness Movement began out of the teachings of John Wesley, who held that Christ's atonement provided sufficient grace for the believer to live in this world continually loving God and neighbor unconditionally, although the believer's expressions of that love would not be perfect. Since its founding, different movements have been spawned and have interpreted Wesley's doctrine in their own way. The two volumes presented here represent the first installation of a three-part series that greatly expands upon Charles Jones's landmark 1974 work. This work focuses on the Wesleyan Holiness Movement, while the third and fourth volumes have the Keswick Movement and the Holiness Pentecostal Movement as their focal points. This series provides materials for study of doctrine, worship, institutional development and personalities, as well as antecedent and related movements. It will serve to illustrate the history both of the Holiness Movement and the rural-urban transition in which it developed. Theological reconsiderations, realignments, and changes, as well as the nearly exponential growth of the Movement since the book's publication, make these new publications almost absolutely necessary. The guides retain all of the good and strong qualities exhibited in the first edition, and have strengthened them.
