Excerpt from By Trench and Trail in Song and Story And it is not impossible that some of my country men are now warbling snatches of my humble verse to the accompaniment of bagpipes on the streets of the New Jerusalem! Many of the verses have appeared from time to time in leading publications from Vancouver, B. C., to the New England States and Eastern Canada; while others appear in print here for the first time. From all parts of the land I have received letters at various times asking for extra copies of some particular song in my humble collection, which I was not in a position to supply at the time. I therefore decided to publish some of the songs for which a demand had been expressed, and in so doing offer to the reading public in extenuation of my offense the plea that in a manner this humble volume is being published by request. I offer no apology for my dialect songs as they have already received the approval of music lovers whose judgment is beyond criticism. For the errors which must inevitably creep into the work of a non-college-bred lumberjack, I crave the indulgence of all highbrows who may resent my inability to comb the classics for copy to please them. All the merit I can claim is the ability to rhyme a limerick or sing a come-all-ye in a man ner perhaps not unpleasing to my friends. Excerpt from Songs of Exuberance: Together With the Trenches This, that it needs be that proverbs come, but woe to the man's fame by whom they come. It is an accident if his name survives. This, apparently, is History's acknowledgment of the fact that nobody seems able to learn wisdom from them. To digest a proverb, or a clause in the creed, some crisis has to force us to experience the process out of which it has burst into light, like a star in our darkness, with pain, and speed, and tra'vail. It is the process, rather than the proverb, which we have to know. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Soldier Songs You have often asked me what are the favourite songs of the soldier on Active Service, the rhymed lines which give expression to his soul. It is difficult to give'an answer, the mere words are dud shells, which drop harmlessly to earth close to their objective. The soldier and his song cannot be separated from their surroundings. Let me explain and quote in illustra tion an incident which occurred a few weeks ago. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
