The historical interface between science and religion was depicted as an unbridgeable conflict in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. The study of Thackeray's major fiction reconstructs the novelist's working methods with the help of manuscript material, much of it previously unpublished. Alexander Pope (1688-1744) was the most important English poet of the 18th century, as well as an essayist, satirist, and critic. Many of his sayings are still quoted today.
