An ecological study of nesting waterfowl was conducted on two islands and a peninsula in Miquelon Lake, Alberta. In addition to observations of population parameters, aided through a study of nesting waterfowl, experimentation through habitat manipulation was conducted to test hypotheses concerning the roles of predation on, and habitat selection by, waterfowl. The species studied included lesser scaup (Aythya affinis), gadwall (Anas strepera), mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), pintail (Anas acuta), white-winged scoter (Melanitta deglandi), and American widgeon (Mareca americana). Evidence indicates that waterfowl concentrate on islands to nest in response to their insular position which excludes many mammalian predators. Distribution of vegetation on the islands affected the distribution and density of waterfowl nests. The presence of gulls neither attracted nor repelled waterfowl from nesting on the islands. The numbers of gulls, which influenced the development of vegetation, indirectl.

Kortright and later revised by Frank Bellrose, this latest edition, which has been meticulously updated by renowned waterfowl biologist Guy Baldassarre, continues the legacy of esteemed authors. Each species account contains in-depth sections on: • identification • distribution • migration behavior • habitat • population status • breeding biology • rearing of young • recruitment and survival • food habits and feeding ecology • molts and plumages • conservation and management To facilitate identification, the species accounts also include detailed illustrations of wings. An appendix contains comparative illustrations of ducklings, goslings, and cygnets. Vegetation and environment relationships were investigated on man-made earth islands in July and August of 1985 and 1986. The islands were built by Ducks Unlimited Canada to provide upland nesting cover for waterfowl. Twenty islands distributed throughout 12 wetlands (sloughs)were studied. The wetlands are located in east-central Alberta in the aspen parkland ecoregion. The flora and soils of each island were described. Correlation analysis was used to relate total and indiviudal species foliar cover to environmental, primarily soil, variables. A point-intercept frame and a nestingboard were used to record foliar cover in 1-m2 quadrats. Soils (0 - 15 cm depth) were collected within the quadrats. At least 3 quadrats/island were sampled. The quadrats were positioned on the islands using a stratified-random framework. The following soil properties were measured: total N (n), pH, electrical conductivity, exchangeable and soluble cations, sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), exchangeable sodium.
